Memeç Rocks

Memeç Rocks, located in the Göynüş Valley section of the Phrygian Valley, is a settlement area carved into volcanic tuff rocks during the Byzantine period, shaped by centuries of natural erosion. This complex of structures, believed to have been actively used between the 8th and 10th centuries AD, consists of living quarters and a chapel. The name of the rocks comes from the shape of the tuff formations in the region. This rock mass, distinctly separated from its surroundings by its steepness and verticality, is easily noticeable even from a distance.

The fact that AROG, one of the popular productions of Turkish cinema, was filmed here, has turned Memeç Rocks into a separate attraction for cinema enthusiasts. When visited together with other ruins on the Phrygian Valley route, it is possible to experience the region's thousands of years of history in a layered manner.

The most suitable periods to visit Memeç Rocks are the spring and autumn months. In April-May, the surrounding nature turns green, and the mild weather makes walking comfortable. In September and October, temperatures drop, visitor density decreases, and lighting conditions become very favorable for photography.

During the summer months, Afyonkarahisar and its surroundings can be quite hot. If you prefer to visit during this period, setting off in the early morning hours will both protect you from the sun and allow you to explore the rocks in a calmer atmosphere. In winter, roads can sometimes become difficult; therefore, it is important to check the weather forecast before visiting.

The most practical way to reach Memeç Rocks is by private car. From Afyonkarahisar city center, head towards İhsaniye district, then in the direction of Döğer Town. From Döğer, turn onto Emre Lake road, and after approximately 4 km, you will reach the rocks. The distance to Afyonkarahisar city center is approximately 120 kilometers, and the journey may take 1.5 hours.

Access is also possible from neighboring provinces such as Eskişehir and Kütahya; Döğer Town is a reasonable distance from all three cities. Since public transportation options are quite limited, car rental or joining organized Phrygian Valley cultural tours offers a more practical alternative. Getting directions becomes easier by entering Döğer Town or Emre Lake as the destination in navigation applications.

Memeç Rocks becomes a much more meaningful visit when considered as part of the Phrygian Valley route rather than a standalone stop. You can include the following points in a one-day itinerary centered around Döğer Town: Ayazini Village and Ayazini Metropolis, Emre Lake, Memeç Rocks, Aslantaş Monument, and Yılantaş Monument. This route allows you to experience the traces of Phrygian and Byzantine civilizations in the region consecutively.

There is also an opportunity for hiking along the route. Phrygian Way trails shared on platforms like Wikiloc cover routes extending from Döğer, through Memeç Rocks, to Üçlerkayası. It is possible to follow these trails with sufficient water and appropriate footwear.

Memeç Rocks offers an extremely photogenic area with its dramatic vertical rock masses and historical structures carved into them. Wide-angle shots taken from in front of the rocks simultaneously reflect the layered texture of the tuff formations and the depth of the surrounding valley. In the morning light, the rock surfaces take on warm tones, while in the afternoon, shadows make the intricate structure of the rocks more pronounced.

Close-up shots of the rock carvings where the chapel and living quarters are located yield powerful images that highlight the historical texture. Compositions using Emre Lake as a background also create a unique atmosphere specific to the region. It is recommended to check relevant regulations beforehand for drone use.

Memeç Rocks is located in a natural area, away from urban infrastructure. It is important to bring sufficient water and snacks with you before visiting; there may not be shops or cafes nearby. Due to the steep and uneven terrain, sturdy walking shoes should be preferred.

It should be remembered to be careful when entering the rock carvings, not to damage historical structures, and not to remove any objects. In summer, it is important to use a hat and sunscreen to protect against sunstroke. There are no dining establishments immediately near Memeç Rocks. However, in Döğer Town and İhsaniye district, there are small businesses where you can meet your basic needs. If you are including Afyonkarahisar city center in your daily itinerary, you must try local delicacies such as Afyon sucuk (spicy sausage), kaymaklı ekmek kadayıfı (bread pudding with clotted cream), and lokum (Turkish delight), which have become symbols of the region.

If you plan a long field visit, taking ready-made sandwiches, fruit, and plenty of water with you will be both a practical and safe choice. On the way back to Afyonkarahisar, experiencing kaymak and pişmaniye (floss halva) at the city's established patisseries can also be a beautiful finale to your route.
