Great Offensive Headquarters (Atatürk House) – Şuhut, Afyonkarahisar

Any time of year is suitable for visiting the Great Offensive Headquarters; however, the August 25-30 Victory Week transforms it into a completely different atmosphere. Every year on the night of August 25, thousands of people participate in the Victory Road march starting from this mansion, and the district becomes a center of national enthusiasm. This week is perfect for those who wish to witness the ceremonies and commemoration events.

Be prepared for Afyonkarahisar's inner Anatolian climate during the summer months; temperatures can rise significantly. April-June and September-October offer a more balanced visiting experience in terms of both weather and crowds. While the headquarters can be visited in winter, it is advisable to check road conditions for travel to Şuhut beforehand.

The Great Offensive Headquarters is located in the Şuhut district, approximately 45 km from Afyonkarahisar city center. If you are coming by your own vehicle, simply follow the Afyon-Şuhut highway (D695); once you enter the town center, you can follow the signs for Yalı Neighborhood.

For those wishing to come by public transport, regular minibus services operate from Afyonkarahisar bus terminal to Şuhut. Once you get off in Şuhut town center, Yalı Neighborhood is within walking distance; asking local shopkeepers for directions will also be very helpful. For those arriving in Afyonkarahisar by train or bus, there is a minibus connection from the city center to Şuhut.

The Hacıvelioğlu Mansion is a traditional Anatolian mansion built by Hacı Veli from Şuhut in 1896-1897. The structure played a critical role in the preparation process of the Great Offensive, the most decisive operation of the Turkish War of Independence. On August 24, 1922, Mustafa Kemal Pasha and the command staff completed their final preparations here; the offensive, which began on the morning of August 26, culminated in victory at Kocatepe on August 30.

With this historical function, the mansion is one of the rare structures bearing the tangible traces of the Turkish struggle for independence. Restored and converted into a house museum, the building exhibits period furniture, photographs, and documents. Visitors can personally see the rooms where Mustafa Kemal Pasha stayed and the places where the offensive plans were laid out.

To explore Şuhut and its surroundings most efficiently, start your day early at the Great Offensive Headquarters. After examining the mansion inside and out, take a short walk in the town center for a local breakfast.

In the afternoon, head towards Kocatepe; the Kocatepe Monument and the Great Offensive Martyrs' Cemetery within the Başkomutan Historical National Park should be on your visit list. Short walking trails are also available along the Victory Road route. You can complete your day by returning to Afyonkarahisar city center for castle views and a bazaar stroll.

As the building is a historic mansion, there may be steps and narrow passages inside; visitors with mobility limitations are advised to consider this. During Victory Week events, the district experiences a high influx of visitors; those wishing to come during this period are advised to plan their accommodation and transportation in advance.

Şuhut and Afyonkarahisar cuisine reflects the simple and hearty flavors of Central Anatolia. In the restaurants in the town center, you can try local dishes such as tandoor kebab, keşkek, and tutmaç soup. Afyonkarahisar's registered delicacies, sucuk (spicy sausage) and pastırma (cured beef), are among the top regional flavors.

For dessert, Afyon clotted cream (kaymak) and Turkish delight (lokum) are a must-try. When returning from Şuhut to Afyonkarahisar city center, a traditional breakfast plate served with kaymak and honey at the patisseries in the bazaar will allow you to end the day on a sweet note.
