Kahramanmaraş is a city rich in historical texture and vast natural beauty. This two-day itinerary starts from the heart of the city and extends to its lush green plateaus. You will trace the footsteps of the past and find peace in the tranquility of nature.
Kahramanmaraş Castle
Rising in the city center, Kahramanmaraş Castle has a long history stretching from the Late Hittites to the Ottomans. Its ramparts, built with cut and rubble stone in a rectangular form, bear traces of Mamluk and Seljuk architecture. Watching the panoramic view of the city from the top of the castle is a special pleasure, especially near sunset. The Kşk Minaret and the muqarnas crown gate here are among the architecturally striking details.
Taş Medrese
Located near the castle, Taş Medrese was built by Dulkadirolu Bey Aladdevle Bey in the late 15th century. This small complex, consisting of a madrasah, a mosque, and a tomb, reflects the architecture of the period with its cut stone masonry and arched porticos. Its integrated structure with the Ulu Mosque offers a time tunnel in the middle of the historical bazaars.
Hatuniye Mosque
Built by Dulkadirolu Bey Aladdevle in 1509 in the name of his wife Şems Hatun, Hatuniye Mosque holds an important place as it was built to commemorate Yavuz Sultan Selim's grandmother. The mosque, built with cut stone and a wooden roof technique, has a complex layout that includes a madrasah and a tomb. The 1906 restoration inscription on the courtyard gate is also a striking detail.
klime Hatun Mosque and Tomb
Within walking distance of Hatuniye Mosque, just above the Suk-i Maraş Bazaar, klime Hatun Mosque and Tomb was built in 1547 in the name of klime Hatun, a member of the Dulkadirolu dynasty. This small-scale structure, made of cut and rubble stone, consists of a tomb to the south and a mosque to the north. It is also noteworthy for having survived the 2023 earthquakes undamaged.
Kahramanmaraş Covered Bazaar
The Covered Bazaar, a historical structure dating back to the 16th century, is famous for its Coppersmiths' Bazaar, where the tradition of coppersmithing is still maintained. With sections like Mazman and Semerciler, it is a vibrant spot where you can find local handicrafts and experience the city's commercial culture up close. It is easily accessible due to its proximity to the Ulu Mosque.
Kocabaş Mansion - Maraş Culture House
Kocabaş Mansion, a short walk from the Covered Bazaar, is a traditional Maraş mansion dating back to the early 19th century. Reflecting the lifestyle of that period with its two-story and bay-windowed architecture, the mansion welcomes visitors with historical artifacts exhibited in its rooms and a courtyard with a fountain. It is also an ideal stop to taste local delicacies.
Our second day's route proceeds towards the cool plateaus and natural beauties of Kahramanmaraş.
Başkonuş Plateau
Located approximately 45-50 km from the city center, at an altitude of 1900 meters, Başkonuş Plateau is a nature paradise covered with pine, cedar, and fir forests. Especially in summer, the plateau, which is an escape point with its cool air, offers bungalow accommodation, camping areas, and cedar walking trails. It also has a rich ecosystem with its endemic plants and migratory birds.
Dngele Hot Springs
After Başkonuş Plateau, you can proceed to Dngele Hot Springs, which offers views of Sır Dam. This facility, offering both healing and relaxation with its thermal water at 32-36.9°C from 4 different wells, is located in a natural atmosphere within the forest. The hot springs, which can be visited all four seasons, are perfect for relaxing, especially after a tiring day.
Yavşan Plateau Nature Park
Yavşan Plateau Nature Park, located 36 km from Kahramanmaraş city center, was declared Turkey's 39th Nature Park in 2009. Of this 340-hectare area covered with cedar, fir, and black pine forests, 22 hectares are reserved for picnics and camping. It is a great option for nature walks with its cool plateau air and endemic plant diversity.
Beyolu Water Mill
The approximately 100-year-old Beyolu Water Mill, located in the Trkolu district of Kahramanmaraş, was restored in 2013 and converted into a picnic area. The mill, which stands out with its simple stone architecture, is a beautiful stop to both see a historical structure and relax in the surrounding recreation area. It is a peaceful spot where nature and culture intertwine.
Kahramanmaraş offers many options for those who want to get lost in its historical bazaars and discover its cultural heritage, as well as those who want to be alone with nature in its lush green plateaus. For lunch in the city center, you can choose restaurants offering local delicacies, and in the plateaus, you can enjoy nature with the picnic supplies you bring with you.
