Başkonuş Plateau

Başkonuş Plateau is most frequently visited from June to September. During this period, the area becomes lively with people from Kahramanmaraş and surrounding provinces seeking refuge from the city heat. On weekends, especially Sundays, the plateau gets seriously crowded. Visitors explicitly recommend coming on weekdays; it's easier to find space in camping areas, and you can enjoy nature more peacefully. Late spring and early autumn are also beautiful times in terms of both weather and vegetation.

Başkonuş Plateau is reached by driving approximately 45-50 km from Kahramanmaraş city center in the direction of Andırın, at the 30th kilometer of the road. This journey, which takes about 45 minutes by private car, requires careful driving as it passes through mountain roads. Those wishing to come by public transport can use Andırın minibuses from Kahramanmaraş bus terminal; however, since there is no direct service to the plateau, it is much more practical to prefer a private car or a rental car.

There is a country restaurant within the plateau. According to visitor comments, when the restaurant is busy on weekends, some dishes on the menu run out, and service slows down. It is also reported that prices are high, with a meal for three approaching 2000 TL. There is also a market in the area; bread and basic necessities can be obtained here. Vegetables and fruits are also sold at the entrance gate. For long stays, it is recommended to bring your own food or complete your shopping in advance.

For those who only want to see the plateau, a day trip is sufficient; visiting the picnic areas and the Cedar Trail fills 4-6 hours. For those who want to enjoy nature more, experience the cool morning air and the night stars, at least one night's stay is recommended. For those who prefer bungalows, comments highlight that the rooms are clean; for the camping area, weekdays are much calmer and more comfortable.

The summit of the Cedar Trail stands out as one of the best viewpoint of the plateau. The forest paths, with the atmosphere created by fir and juniper trees, offer beautiful frames for photography. In the early morning hours, fog and dew create visually rich shots, especially in spring. Endemic plants and migratory birds are also interesting subjects for macro and nature photography.

There are some practical warnings highlighted in visitor comments. A vehicle entry fee is charged; comments mention figures varying between 120-160 TL, so it's good to confirm the current fee with an official source before going. Electrical panels in the camping area are limited to 6 amps, so high-power electrical devices do not work. More than one visitor has complained about toilet cleanliness; therefore, it is recommended to bring your personal hygiene supplies. Lighting fires in picnic areas is prohibited. There is no shared refrigerator in the camping area; you need to bring a cooler bag for products requiring a cold chain. Phone signal can be weak on the plateau, so complete important communications in advance.

After reaching the plateau entrance, you can first explore the picnic and camping areas for a general orientation. Then head to the Cedar Trail; this moderate-to-high difficulty route continues with beautiful views up to the summit. After returning from the hike, you can have lunch at the country restaurant, and in the afternoon, you can spend time with activities like horse riding or ATV. For those who want to stay overnight, a fire-free camping night in a bungalow or tent area in the evening, and a walk on the plateau in the morning, makes for a nice program.
