Yeşilgöz Sinkhole

The best time to visit Yeşilgöz Sinkhole is between April and September. In summer, the water level is high, and there is plenty of greenery and shade; the coldness of the water is especially appreciated on hot days. Road conditions can be difficult in winter.

On weekends, especially during summer holidays, the place attracts large crowds. The vast majority of visitors recommend going on weekdays; it's easier to find a place to sit, and you can hear the sounds of nature more clearly. If you plan to go on a weekend, choose early morning hours.

From Kahramanmaraş city center, follow the Göksun highway towards Kayseri. After approximately 60 km, when you reach Tekir Neighborhood, you will see signs directing you to Yeşilgöz Sinkhole, about 3 km off the highway. Coming by car is the most practical option; there is a parking area near the sinkhole.

Public transport access is quite limited. You can take buses from Kahramanmaraş towards Göksun or Kayseri to Tekir, but the walking distance from there to the sinkhole is long. Renting a car or using a private vehicle would be a much more comfortable option.

Yeşilgöz gets its name from the peculiar green color of its water. The source and color of the water in this sinkhole lake, said to be approximately 20 meters deep, are not fully scientifically explained; this makes it one of Kahramanmaraş's most mysterious natural sites. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism also promotes Yeşilgöz among the region's prominent natural beauties.

The plane trees and weeping willows by the water create a cool atmosphere, especially in mid-summer. With recent renovations by the municipality, the lake perimeter has been fenced with wooden barriers, covered seating benches have been installed, and general cleanliness has been improved. Entry is free; restrooms and a prayer room are also available.

The most striking photographic angle of Yeşilgöz emerges when looking into the water right from the edge of the sinkhole. The shades of green change with the light and season; the color is most vibrant when the sun hits the water directly at noon.

Compositions using the branches of the plane trees and willows by the water as a frame are also quite effective. In the early morning, fog and reflections can transform the place into a completely different scene. A wide-angle lens or the panorama mode of phone cameras is a good choice to convey the depth of the sinkhole.

Since Yeşilgöz Sinkhole is a recreational area, the vast majority of visitors bring their own food. There are areas where picnics and barbecues can be held; however, barbecue smoke can become dense, especially on weekends.

On the way, buying Maraş tarhana and firik (roasted green wheat) from the village stalls along the Kahramanmaraş-Göksun highway is a good habit both for getting to know the region and for adding local flavors to your picnic. Restaurant options in the immediate vicinity are quite limited; it is advisable to prepare your food and drinks in advance.

The water of the sinkhole is extremely cold; caution should be exercised regarding swimming or entering the water. Although the lake perimeter is fenced with wooden barriers, it is important to keep children supervised near the water.

Some visitors draw attention to the problem of litter and waste. To protect nature, it is critical to take your trash with you to preserve the beauty of this area for many years. Parking can fill up on weekends; arriving early will make it easier to find a spot and allow you to enjoy the sinkhole before the crowds.

Yeşilgöz Sinkhole can be considered part of a half-day itinerary. 2-4 hours are sufficient to explore the sinkhole, take photos, and have a picnic. You can create a full-day program including the round trip from Kahramanmaraş city center.

There are other natural spots in the region; you can make the day more productive by taking short walks around Tekir Valley. Kahramanmaraş city center remains the most practical option for accommodation.
