Taş Han

While most of the year is suitable for visiting Taş Han, the periods of March–May and September–November stand out in terms of both temperature and bazaar vibrancy. Kahramanmaraş can be quite hot in the summer months; choosing between 08:00–10:00 during this period will make the visit much more comfortable. In winter months, the han and bazaar become calmer; this period can be advantageous for those who want to take photos in a quiet environment away from the crowds.

Taş Han is located right in the heart of Kahramanmaraş city center, east of the Grand Bazaar. City dolmuş and minibuses operate to the center; it's within walking distance from there. Those arriving by car can look for parking in the surrounding streets. Since the structure is on Belediye Street, it can be easily found with navigation apps.

Taş Han was built around 1650 by Mehmet Efendi, Kalender Çelebi, and Ahmet Çelebi from the Hatipzade family. The two-story structure, rising around a square courtyard, follows the classic Ottoman caravanserai plan. The spaces on the ground floor were designed as stables for caravan animals and storage for goods; the rooms on the upper floor were arranged as accommodation units for travelers.

An inscription is located above the entrance gate; however, due to damage over time, the writing is no longer legible. Stone masonry and wooden details are the main elements that carry the han's original texture to the present day. The structure, forming an organic whole with the bazaar complex, is an indispensable link in Kahramanmaraş's historical trade network.

Taş Han stands in the middle of Kahramanmaraş's busiest commercial and gastronomic area. You can find Maraş-style kebabs and soups in the small restaurants within the bazaar. To taste the city's famous ice cream, traditional ice cream shops around the bazaar should be your first stop. Tahini halva and Maraş pepper are also among the prominent flavors of the region.

The very center of the han's square courtyard is the best spot to frame the two-story arcaded rows. The texture of the stone walls and wooden details offer rich material for close-up shots. The light falling into the courtyard at midday highlights the color of the stones and the play of shadows. For those who want to document the merchants' preparations and the han's daily life, between 08:00–09:30 offers great shots.

Entry to Taş Han is free. Since the structure is still an active commercial space, the shops and warehouses inside are operating; you can enjoy this lively atmosphere during your visit. As the floor is stone-paved and uneven in some sections, it is advisable to wear comfortable shoes. Visiting it together with the Grand Bazaar is a good idea to fully grasp the historical trade texture.

You can create a half-day walking itinerary by combining Taş Han with other structures in Kahramanmaraş's historical center. Start from the Grand Bazaar, move on to Taş Han, then visit the nearby Historical Maraş Castle and traditional Maraş mansions. At the end of the route, stopping at one of the shops around the bazaar to taste the city's famous ice cream would be a nice conclusion.
