Saraçlar Bazaar

Saraçlar Bazaar is an integral part of the Grand Bazaar area in Kahramanmaraş. Named after the saddlers who made a living from leather processing, this bazaar has maintained its commercial function since the Dulkadiroğulları Beylik period. The bazaar, which preserved its vitality during the Ottoman period, still remains a tangible reflection of the city's traditional trade culture today.

Traditional hand tools used in the bazaar include awls, hammers, compasses, scissors, needles, and pliers. In this historical area, where coppersmiths are also abundant, you have the opportunity to directly observe Maraş's centuries-old trade tradition while shopping. Although some visitors state that the shop structure has changed in recent years, the prevailing view is that the historical atmosphere and architectural texture have been largely preserved.

Visiting the bazaar before noon on weekdays is advantageous both for seeing the artisans actively working in their workshops and for catching the best light for photography. Some traditional shops may be closed on weekends; it is more appropriate to choose weekdays from Monday to Friday. In summer, the bazaar can be hot during midday; early morning or late afternoon hours provide a more pleasant stroll.

Saraçlar Bazaar is located in the city center of Kahramanmaraş, intertwined with the Grand Bazaar. After reaching the center by city shared taxis and minibuses, you can reach the bazaar with a short walk in the direction of the Grand Bazaar. For those coming by car, there are paid and free parking areas nearby; however, it is not possible to enter the narrow streets by car. Due to its proximity to other historical sites in Kahramanmaraş, planning the bazaar visit on the same day as other points of interest in the city center would be a practical option.

The narrow streets of the bazaar, old shops with wooden and stone facades, and workshops where artisans work with hand tools offer rich content for photography. When the morning light enters the streets at certain angles, it is possible to capture deep and atmospheric shots. Handmade products on coppersmiths' stalls and the general panorama of the bazaar are also frequently preferred shots. It is a good habit to politely ask the shopkeepers before taking photos inside the bazaar.

The Grand Bazaar area, where Saraçlar Bazaar is located, is also a rich center for gastronomy in Kahramanmaraş. Around the bazaar, there are shops serving Maraş-style ice cream, kebab and lahmacun restaurants, and patisseries selling local desserts. You can personally experience Maraş's iconic stretchy ice cream and spicy food culture in this area.

Handmade leather products, copper-embossed household items, and local souvenir products are among the prominent shopping items in the bazaar. Hand tools and workshop products bearing the traces of the saddlery tradition can be counted among the unique souvenirs of the bazaar. By communicating directly with the shopkeepers, you can both learn the story of the products and find common ground for prices. Although some visitors note that the variety of shops has changed in recent years, artisans committed to traditional crafts are still present in the bazaar.

The narrow streets of the bazaar can become very crowded during peak hours; it is recommended to pay attention to your valuables. Wheelchair and stroller use is difficult due to the narrow and unpaved streets. Some shops may take short breaks during lunchtime. For those who want to visit the bazaar along with the Grand Bazaar, comfortable shoes are important; the ground sometimes consists of cobblestones and uneven surfaces.
