The Kahramanmaraş Grand Mosque is a historical mosque with a Seljuk plan scheme, located on Atatürk Boulevard in the city center, built by Süleyman Bey between 1442-1454; it was restored and reopened for worship after the 2023 earthquake.
Rising in the heart of Kahramanmaraş, right next to the historical covered bazaar and hammam, at the foot of Maraş Castle, the Grand Mosque is the most important architectural legacy left to the city by the Dulkadiroğlu Principality. According to endowments, the structure was built by Süleyman Bey between 1442 and 1454, repaired by Alaüddevle Bey in 1501, and supported by further endowments. Its prayer hall, measuring 22x40.90 meters externally, its wooden roof supported by multi-legged arches, and its twelve large square pillars in the center make it one of the unique examples of the Seljuk tradition in Anatolia.
The mosque, whose minaret collapsed and walls were severely damaged in the earthquakes of February 6, 2023, has been rebuilt after an extensive restoration process. The first thing visitors notice upon entering is the unique scent of the wooden ceiling; the atmosphere created by the combination of stone walls and wooden craftsmanship deeply affects many visitors. The Grand Mosque, one of the places where the historical texture is most intensely felt for those visiting Kahramanmaraş, is a must-see stop on a city tour.
Guide's Note
When to Visit?
The weather in Kahramanmaraş is best in spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). During these periods, both city tours and exploring the historical bazaar and castle area are much more enjoyable. If you want to examine the interior of the Grand Mosque, choose hours outside of prayer times; you can explore the structure much more calmly after the congregation disperses.
How to Get There?
The Grand Mosque is located at Atatürk Boulevard No:73 in the city center of Kahramanmaraş. You can easily reach it by minibuses and municipal buses coming to the center from any point in the city. The historical bazaar, covered market, and Maraş Castle are within walking distance, so it is possible to create a walking route that combines these areas. For those coming by car, finding parking nearby can sometimes be difficult; it is more practical to choose the parking lots of the nearby covered bazaar.
How Much Time Should Be Allocated?
30-45 minutes is sufficient for the Grand Mosque. However, the mosque should not be considered separately from the historical bazaar, Maraş Castle, and the surrounding old city fabric; if you allocate half a day to a full day for this entire region, your trip will be much more productive. For those who want to explore the historical center of Kahramanmaraş in a single walk, the Grand Mosque is an ideal starting point.
Surrounding Tour Route
After visiting the Grand Mosque, you can stop by the historical covered bazaar a few steps away and the historical hammam nearby. From there, you can take a short walk towards Maraş Castle to see the panoramic view of the city. Along the route, there are also famous ice cream shops of Kahramanmaraş and restaurants offering local delicacies; a great opportunity to complete the historical tour with a gastronomic experience.
What to Eat Nearby?
The historical center where the Grand Mosque is located is a good starting point to get to know Kahramanmaraş cuisine. You can taste the city's world-renowned Maraş ice cream from traditional shops nearby. Restaurants offering local delicacies such as the region's unique Maraş tarhana soup, oruk, and herse are also easily found around the historical bazaar.
Photo Spots
The best photo angles from outside the mosque are obtained when framing the facade from Atatürk Boulevard. Inside, the wooden ceiling craftsmanship and perspective shots between the columns offer striking frames. Natural light enters better before noon. For detailed photos documenting the post-earthquake restoration process, the junction points of stone walls and wooden beams contain interesting details.
Things to Know Before Visiting
The Grand Mosque is an active place of worship. Visitors should be quiet and respectful during their visit. Female visitors are required to wear a headscarf and modest clothing; shorts are not suitable for men. Shoes are removed at the entrance. When taking photos, be careful not to disturb the congregation praying. The mosque was damaged in the February 6, 2023 earthquakes and has been restored; as some sections may still be undergoing work, it is advisable to confirm the current status before visiting.
