Dedeoğlu Mansion

Dedeoğlu Mansion was built in H.1326, or 1908 AD, in the Kurtuluş neighborhood of Dulkadiroğlu district. The ground floor was constructed with stone, while the upper two floors were raised with wooden craftsmanship. This mixed construction technique is one of the features that distinguish Maraş mansions from other traditional structures.

The building is a typical example of Ottoman traditional residential architecture with its external sofa, kiosk, and iwan plan arrangement. Its three open facades offer visitors the opportunity to observe the mansion from different angles. The delicacy of the wooden craftsmanship and its balance with the stone walls make the building one of the important civil architectural examples that form the urban fabric of Kahramanmaraş.

The most suitable periods to visit Kahramanmaraş are spring (April–May) and autumn (October). The weather is mild during these seasons, making walks through the historic streets much more enjoyable. Visitors emphasize that the mansion has a cool interior atmosphere in summer and a warm one in winter; summer and winter visits are also possible.

Visiting during weekdays, especially to observe the handicraft works at the Maturation Institute, might be more productive. Since some sections might be closed due to restoration work, we recommend calling the municipality for information before your visit.

The mansion is located close to Kahramanmaraş city center, on Bedesten Street. You can reach Dulkadiroğlu district from any point in the city by taxi or dolmuş. If you use Suk-i Maraş Bazaar as a starting point, you will reach the mansion after approximately a 5-minute walk through the historic streets.

If you are coming by car, it is more practical to head to the parking lots around the bazaar and walk from there; finding parking in the streets close to the historic fabric can be difficult.

Dedeoğlu Mansion is within walking distance of Suk-i Maraş Bazaar. There are many restaurants in and around the bazaar offering indispensable dishes of Kahramanmaraş cuisine such as tarhana soup, sour meatballs (ekşili köfte), and Maraş-style kebab. Maraş ice cream can be found everywhere in the city; it makes for a sweet end to your visit.

The three open facades of the mansion allow for photography from different angles. The corner points where the stone walls meet the wooden floors reveal the most characteristic appearance of the building. In frames taken along Bedesten Street, the mansion forms a strong composition with the historic street texture. Midday natural light best brings out the wooden craftsmanship of the building.

A part of the mansion is undergoing restoration due to earthquake damage. It is important to call Kahramanmaraş Municipality before planning your visit to find out which sections are open. It is expected that you observe the handicraft works exhibited in the Maturation Institute section without touching them. Those planning group visits or guided tours should inquire in advance.

Since Dedeoğlu Mansion is located in the historical center of Kahramanmaraş, it can be visited in a single day along with other important points of the city. If you add places like Maraş Castle, Eshab-ı Kehf Complex, Germanicia Ancient City mosaics, and Suk-i Maraş Bazaar to your itinerary, you should allocate at least two full days. For those who also want to see natural beauties such as Başkonuş Plateau or Yedikuyular Ski Center, three days would be a more suitable duration.
