The Kahramanmaraş Grand Mosque is a historical mosque with a Seljuk plan scheme, located on Atatürk Boulevard in the city center, built by Süleyman Bey between 1442-1454; it was restored and reopened for worship after the 2023 earthquake.
Rising in the heart of Kahramanmaraş, right next to the historical covered bazaar and hammam, at the foot of Maraş Castle, the Grand Mosque is the most important architectural legacy left to the city by the Dulkadiroğlu Principality. According to endowments, the structure was built by Süleyman Bey between 1442 and 1454, repaired by Alaüddevle Bey in 1501, and supported by further endowments. Its prayer hall, measuring 22x40.90 meters externally, its wooden roof supported by multi-legged arches, and its twelve large square pillars in the center make it one of the unique examples of the Seljuk tradition in Anatolia.
The mosque, whose minaret collapsed and walls were severely damaged in the earthquakes of February 6, 2023, has been rebuilt after an extensive restoration process. The first thing visitors notice upon entering is the unique scent of the wooden ceiling; the atmosphere created by the combination of stone walls and wooden craftsmanship deeply affects many visitors.
