Eshab-ı Kehf Complex

Eshab-ı Kehf is a place identified with the story of young people who, as narrated in Surah Al-Kahf, the 18th surah of the Quran, took refuge in a cave to preserve their faith and are said to have slept there for over 300 years. This cave, attributed to these individuals also known as the Seven Sleepers, is located on a rocky hillside in Afşin. The complex consists of a mosque, a tomb, and various historical structures.

The structures, built between 1215-1234 during the reign of Nusretüddin Hasan Bey, the Seljuk Emir of Maraş, were later expanded during the Dulkadiroğlu Beylik and Ottoman periods. The site is considered sacred not only in Islamic faith but also in Christian tradition; the Roman-era baptismal sites and column remains inside the mosque are concrete evidence of this multi-layered history.

The most suitable period to visit the complex is during April-May and September-October. During these months, the weather is cool and suitable for walking. In summer, especially in mid-July and August, temperatures in the rocky terrain can be quite oppressive; it is best to plan summer visits before 09:00 or in the late afternoon.

During religious holidays, especially Eid al-Adha, visitor density significantly increases. If you prefer a quiet visit, choose weekdays.

The complex is located approximately 7 km northwest of Afşin district, which is part of Kahramanmaraş province, near Emirli village. You can reach Afşin from Kahramanmaraş city center by bus or minibus; the journey takes about 1.5-2 hours. From Afşin, you can go to the complex by taxi or private car. There is no regular public transport line to the complex.

If you are coming by car, you need to follow the Afşin-Elbistan highway towards Emirli village. It is recommended to use a map application as signage along the way may be insufficient.

The silhouette of the complex leaning against the rocky valley provides beautiful light, especially at midday and in the late afternoon. The Roman-era column capitals and baptismal fonts inside the mosque are strong photographic subjects reflecting the historical texture. The cave entrance and the surrounding rock surfaces also offer interesting frames.

Panoramic shots taken from the top of the valley where the complex is located are considered among the best images to convey the geographical context of the place. When taking photos, it is important to respect the privacy of worshiping visitors.

Entry to the cave is provided through the men's section of the mosque. Since female visitors may not be able to access the cave this way, it is advisable to inquire about the current situation on-site before going. Signage within the complex is insufficient; you can ask the mosque's imam or staff for help to avoid missing important points.

Visitor comments have sometimes raised complaints about cleanliness; the maintenance of ablution facilities can be inconsistent. Information about planned restoration work in the near future is also available; keep in mind that some areas may be temporarily closed during this process. As it is a religious site, it is necessary to come in appropriate attire.

1.5 to 2.5 hours is sufficient to comfortably explore the complex. Those who wish to examine the cave, mosque, tombs, and Roman-era remains individually may extend this period slightly. If the mosque's imam provides detailed information about the site, this conversation will also add value to your visit.

Dining facilities immediately around the complex are quite limited. When you return to Afşin district center, you can find the flavors of Kahramanmaraş cuisine in local restaurants. Maraş-style kebab and regional soups are among the prominent tastes of the region. Taking water and light snacks with you before your visit, especially in summer, will be very helpful.
