Döngel Cave

Döngel Cave is located within the borders of Döngel Village, on the 50th kilometer of the Kahramanmaraş-Kayseri highway. This structure, consisting of three interconnected and stacked caves, is known as one of the areas where the oldest settlement traces in the region are found. The stalactite and stalagmite formations inside the cave are the product of thousands of years of geological processes. The Döngel Stream and waterfall flowing right next to it add a distinct vibrancy to the area.

The most suitable period to visit Döngel Cave is between April-June and September-October. During these months, the weather is neither too hot nor too cold; the stream water also flows high. In July-August, the picnic area can get quite crowded on weekends; if you plan to come during this period, choose weekdays. In winter months, the roads can become muddy and slippery.

From Kahramanmaraş city center, head towards Kayseri and take the Göksun highway. Follow the sign indicating Döngel Village at approximately the 50th kilometer; you can reach the cave from within the village. The journey by car takes about 20 minutes. For those wishing to go by public transport, there are known minibus services from Kahramanmaraş bus terminal on the Göksun or Döngel route; it is recommended to check the schedules in advance. It is stated that there are no parking problems around the cave.

The path leading to the cave is rough and slippery in places. Visitors state that they may encounter unexpected construction debris on the ground and there is a risk of falling. Do not go to the cave without sturdy, non-slip shoes. It is not recommended to go with slippers or shoes with slippery soles.

The area is not suitable for the elderly, disabled, and individuals with chronic illnesses; the ground conditions can pose serious difficulties for these groups. There are also comments about some facilities in the picnic area (buffet, mosque, etc.) being neglected; adjust your expectations accordingly. The stream water is quite cold even in summer; if you plan to enter the water, bring a towel and spare clothes.

There are several valuable spots for photography around Döngel Cave. The angles overlooking the valley while ascending to the cave offer beautiful shots, especially at times when the sun hits at certain angles. The waterfall and stream bed are also worth capturing; however, it can be difficult to frame the shot when the area in front of the waterfall is crowded with picnickers. The rock formations right in front of the cave entrance also create an interesting background.

There are gazebos in the picnic area; you can bring your own food and have a picnic here. Although it is stated that there is a business in the area resembling a buffet or cafe, visitors express that these facilities do not provide adequate service. If you plan to stay for a long time, preparing your food and drinks in advance is a safer option. You can meet your needs before leaving Kahramanmaraş city center.

1-1.5 hours is sufficient to explore the caves, see the waterfall and the stream. If you plan to have a picnic or spend time by the stream, it can extend up to 2-3 hours. Instead of planning it as a standalone destination, it would be more efficient to combine it with other natural areas around Kahramanmaraş to create a day trip itinerary.

You can combine Döngel Cave with other natural beauties of Kahramanmaraş. Depart from the city center and follow the Göksun road; stop by Döngel along the way. On your return, you can add other natural areas of the region, such as Başkonuş Plateau, to your route. The cave is located on the road route, making it suitable for a short detour visit.
