Located right in the middle of Kahramanmaraş city center, buried within the streets of an ordinary neighborhood, the Ancient City of Germanicia is an ancient settlement named after the Roman Emperor Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus. The region, which came under Roman rule in 64 BC, eventually took the name Kaiseria Germanicia; today, it is open to visitors with its unearthed mosaic areas. Thanks to excavation work that began in 2007, the mosaics brought to light consist of floral and geometric motifs, daily life scenes, and compositions reflecting the architectural understanding of the period. The density of tesserae, the small colored stone pieces used in the mosaics, clearly reveals how detailed the depictions were.
The vast majority of visitors positively view the fact that the area can be explored by walking on glass platforms; however, they also note that the walkable area is quite limited and the entire visit is completed in a few minutes. Another frequently repeated issue in comments is that despite the area being declared a protected site, excavation work remains insufficient, and a large part of the city still lies underground. Finding the site can also turn into an adventure in itself: since directional signs are inadequate, getting lost among the narrow streets is almost inevitable. Nevertheless, since admission is free and it has become a natural stop on a Kahramanmaraş trip, everyone visiting the city is recommended to plan a short visit.

Germanicia is an ancient city that came under Roman rule in 64 BC and was named after the emperor of the time, Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus. As temperatures in Kahramanmaraş can exceed 40 degrees Celsius in summer, it is advisable to visit between 08:00–09:00 during this period.
In winter, the weather is cool and occasionally rainy; although a large part of the mosaic area is protected under glass platforms, the surrounding paths can be wet and slippery. Since the area experienced short-term closures after the earthquake, it is necessary to confirm whether it is open before the visit date.
How to Get There?
The Ancient City of Germanicia is located in the Dulkadiroğlu district, close to Kahramanmaraş city center. You can take a taxi from the city center and give the address as 'Germanicia Ancient City' or '18033. Sokak, Dulkadiroğlu'. If you are coming by car, Google Maps navigation is essential; there are almost no directional signs in the surrounding streets.
A significant number of visitors report difficulty in finding the area. To avoid getting lost among the narrow and similar-looking streets, keep your navigation on from the start. Finding parking nearby can also take time.
Photo Spots
Since the mosaics are protected under glass platforms, care must be taken with glass reflections when taking photos. Wide-angle shots taken by looking down from the corner points of the platform are the most practical way to frame all the mosaics. Morning light reflects less on the glass surface, making 08:00–10:00 more suitable for photography.
The area's surroundings are covered with an ordinary neighborhood texture; this contrast can yield interesting shots documenting the peculiar coexistence of ancient and modern. Keep in mind that prior permission is required for drone use.
What to Eat Nearby?
Dining options immediately around Germanicia are quite limited; as the area is within a neighborhood, large restaurants are not nearby. The situation changes when you go to Kahramanmaraş city center.
The city is famous for its Maraş-style pounded ice cream and various spicy kebabs. It is possible to taste local delicacies at the kebab and pide restaurants lined up around the central bazaar. Planning a visit to Germanicia before noon and then having lunch in the city center creates a practical itinerary.
Things to Consider
There are a few important points you should know before visiting. Firstly, the area experienced temporary closures after the earthquake; before you go, confirm whether it is open by checking the official website of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism or by calling the local municipality.
Secondly, the walkable area is quite small; the entire visit does not exceed 15–30 minutes. If you are making a long journey just for this area, adjust your expectations accordingly; visitors also make similar warnings about this. Thirdly, as municipal infrastructure works are sometimes ongoing within the protected site boundaries, the entrance to the area or surrounding roads may be temporarily closed.
How Many Days to Stay in Kahramanmaraş?
Germanicia alone is a stop that doesn't even fill half a day. Kahramanmaraş, when visited along with the ancient city, is a rich city that can fill 1–2 full days. Kahramanmaraş Castle, Taş Mescit, Ulu Cami, and the city's historical bazaar can easily be seen on the same day.
If you can spare more time, it is also possible to extend your trip to natural spots like the Ilıca Thermal Springs or Ekinözü Mineral Waters in the vicinity. Visiting Germanicia first thing in the morning and dedicating the rest of the day to the city center makes for the most efficient plan.
