Adıyaman Rock Tombs

While Mount Nemrut is the first thing that comes to mind when Adıyaman is mentioned, the city's lands bear the traces of a much broader history. The rock-cut tombs reveal how important a settlement the region was during Roman rule. Perre is the ancient name of today's Adıyaman city, and the people who lived in this city immortalized their dead by carving them into rocks. In these areas, where tomb chambers, niche tombs, and sarcophagi can be seen together, it is possible to directly observe the architectural understanding and death rituals of the period.

Not only Perre; similar necropolis areas are also found in villages around the city such as Turuş and Haydaran. This clearly shows how densely populated the region was during the Roman period and how widespread the rock tomb tradition was.

Adıyaman's continental climate keeps temperatures quite high in summer. Since the rock tombs are in an open area, visiting in July and August, especially during midday, can be tiring. April, May, September, and October are the most suitable periods in terms of both air temperature and light conditions. In spring, the surroundings turn green, creating a perfect backdrop for photography. Winter months can be mild; however, some village roads may become difficult in rainy weather.

Early mornings or late afternoons are the most productive times, both cool and photographically. Especially in Perre, the golden color of the rocks near sunset transforms the visit into a completely different experience.

For Perre Ancient City Rock Tombs, it is sufficient to follow the Malatya road from Adıyaman city center; the area is reached after approximately 5 km. College minibuses use this route, so it can also be reached by public transport. Those going by car are advised to follow the road signs.

For Turuş Rock Tombs, turn off to Turuş (Kuyulu) village at the 40th km of the Adıyaman-Şanlıurfa highway; the area becomes visible after driving 1 km west from the village. Haydaran Rock Tombs are in Taşgedik village, 17 km from the center; renting a car or taking a taxi is the most practical way to reach this point. A private vehicle or tour organization is recommended for those who want to visit all three areas on the same day.

If you want to visit the rock tombs in Adıyaman in a single day, it will be advantageous to set off early in the morning. Start your day with Perre Ancient City; its proximity to the city makes it easy to reach, and with over 200 tombs, it is the most comprehensive area. After spending 1.5–2 hours in Perre, proceed to Turuş Rock Tombs using the Adıyaman-Şanlıurfa road. In the afternoon, visit the Haydaran Rock Tombs in Taşgedik village.

It is also possible to combine this route with other historical sites in Adıyaman. Cendere Bridge and Karakuş Tumulus are located on the same route, making them ideal additional stops for those who want to extend their day. Mount Nemrut, however, deserves a separate day.

The rock tombs offer extremely fertile areas for photography enthusiasts. In Perre Ancient City, a human figure standing in front of the rock-cut niche tombs provides an excellent composition to emphasize the scale and depth of the place. The stone craftsmanship and reliefs at the tomb entrances are quite detailed for close-up shots.

The rocky hill in Turuş offers a good vantage point for those who want to see the surroundings from a bird's-eye view. The side light created in the early morning or late afternoon highlights the texture and carving details on the rock surfaces. Photography is allowed in all areas.

Since the rock tombs are protected as an archaeological site, entering tomb chambers or touching any surface is prohibited. As there is not enough shade in the areas, it is strongly recommended to bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water. The ground is uneven and rocky, so choose comfortable walking shoes; high heels or sandals are not suitable.

Roads leading to areas near villages like Turuş and Haydaran can be narrow and unpaved; it may be difficult to go with standard vehicles in rainy weather. It would be beneficial to contact the Adıyaman Museum Directorate before your visit to learn about current access conditions.

After visiting the rock tombs, returning to the city center is the best choice to explore Adıyaman cuisine. Adıyaman is a city with a strong çiğ köfte (raw meatball) and cığ köfte (vegetarian raw meatball) culture; however, the main prominent flavors include tandoor kebab and local baklava varieties. You can find cooked local dishes in local restaurants in the city center.

There are small village tea houses and roadside rest stops on the route near the Perre region; however, returning to the center is a safer option for a comprehensive meal. If you have planned a long trip, don't forget to bring snacks and water.
