Adıyaman Grand Mosque

Adıyaman Grand Mosque is a rare structure that has left deep traces in the city's memory and has been striving to stand for over five hundred years. The mosque, which is said to have been built during the reign of Dulkadirli Bey Durak Bey, has become a symbol of Adıyaman over time. Also referred to as the Alaüddevle Mosque in some documents, the structure is popularly known as the Grand Mosque because it is the oldest mosque in the city. Having undergone various repairs over the centuries, the structure has incorporated traces of each period into its body; this has given it a layered historical identity.

The mosque was built in Adıyaman, under the rule of the Dulkadiroğulları Beylik, between 1506-1515. The Dulkadiroğulları were an important political power in Central and Southeastern Anatolia; the architectural works they left behind constitute an integral part of the cultural heritage of this geography. The Grand Mosque is one of the most concrete representatives of this heritage. The structure has been protected as a registered cultural asset by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. However, the February 6, 2023 earthquakes deeply affected this ancient work, causing serious damage to the structure. Work initiated after the earthquake continues to restore the mosque.

Considering that Adıyaman's summers are quite hot, visiting the Grand Mosque in spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October) offers a much more pleasant experience.
