Yenimahalle (Sakarya River Estuary)

The Sakarya River, one of Turkey's longest rivers, originates from Eskişehir, traverses Anatolia, and after 824 km, reaches the Black Sea at Yenimahalle in Karasu. This confluence point is not only geographically interesting but also visually striking: the color difference between the fresh water of the river and the salty water of the Black Sea can be clearly observed, especially in calm weather. Yenimahalle, a small and tranquil neighborhood, leaves you alone with nature, unlike crowded holiday resorts.

Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are the most productive periods in terms of both weather and scenery. In spring, when the river flow is high, the water color is more distinct, and the coastal vegetation is more vibrant. These seasons are also preferred by those who want to fish; visitors state that spring and early autumn are good times for black fish and carp. In summer, the coast can be more crowded, and the Black Sea wind can be strong.

Yenimahalle is approximately 5 km from Karasu town center. Coming by private car is the most practical option; simply type 'Yenimahalle Karasu' into your navigation apps. Public transport is also available, but we recommend researching bus schedules and routes in advance. Regular bus services operate from Sakarya city center to Karasu.

The confluence where the river meets the sea offers powerful shots, especially in the morning light. The cobblestone road extending from the entrance of the neighborhood to the coast, when framed with the river and sea in the background, can yield interesting compositions. The old concrete bunkers along the coast also make good subjects for documentary-style photographs. The play of light over the Black Sea at sunset is also a moment photography enthusiasts would not want to miss.

Since Yenimahalle itself is a small settlement, you will need to go to Karasu town center for comprehensive restaurant options. Karasu, being on the Black Sea coast, has restaurants offering fresh fish and seafood. Asking local shopkeepers if they offer the possibility to cook the fish you catch in the area could also be an option.

The current at the river mouth can be strong; we recommend caution for those wishing to swim. Visitors point out shortcomings in the cleanliness of the environment; to protect nature, take your waste with you. If you are coming to fish, researching in advance what to catch from which spot or getting information from local fishermen can prevent you from leaving empty-handed. As the weather on the Black Sea coast can change suddenly, we recommend bringing an extra layer of clothing.

Yenimahalle is a stop that can be added to a one-day trip to Karasu or Sakarya. 1-2 hours are sufficient to explore the river mouth, take photos, and spend time on the coast. If you are coming to fish, planning half a day or a full day is more sensible. It can be combined with the Karasu district for a short weekend getaway.
