Acelle Plateau is a natural area in Sakarya's Akyazı district, located at 1200 meters, known for its mixed forest cover, well-maintained plateau houses, and hiking routes extending to Karagöl.
Acelle Plateau, situated approximately 35-40 km south of Akyazı town center at an altitude of 1200 meters, is one of Sakarya's most comprehensive plateaus. It boasts a mixed vegetation where broad-leaved trees intertwine with conifers; rhododendron and boxwood communities within the forests add a distinct depth to this green landscape.
Upon entering the plateau, you are greeted by neat and well-maintained plateau houses. The pond in the western section, with its secluded and tranquil nature away from the houses, is an excellent spot for those wishing to camp. Flat areas within the wooded sections are suitable for pitching tents. Acelle Plateau is also the endpoint of the Karagöl–Acelle line, considered among Turkey's top 10 hiking trails; this approximately 15 km long trail extends through multiple plateaus and ponds. For those seeking longer routes, a 28 km tour covering 7 plateaus and 5 ponds is also an option.

Guide's Note
Best Time to Visit
The most suitable period to visit Acelle Plateau is during the summer season, from early June to late September. During these months, the roads are accessible, the weather is cool, and the vegetation is at its most vibrant. The plateau can get crowded on July and August weekends; weekdays offer a much more peaceful experience for those wishing to avoid crowds. From October onwards, the weather in the higher altitudes rapidly cools, and roads may close.
How to Get There
To reach Acelle Plateau, you first need to arrive at Akyazı district from Sakarya city center. From Akyazı, follow the forest road leading south to the plateau for approximately another 35-40 km to reach the plateau entrance. Most of the road is asphalt; however, as you approach the plateau, there may be sections of gravel dirt road. Using high-clearance vehicles or 4x4s is safer. Public transport connections are quite limited, so a private car or rental car is the most logical choice.
Hiking Routes
Acelle Plateau is located at the intersection of multiple hiking routes. The most popular route is the approximately 15 km trail extending from Karagöl Plateau to Acelle Plateau; it is considered among Turkey's top 10 hiking trails. For those seeking a longer and more comprehensive adventure, a 28 km tour connecting 7 plateaus and 5 ponds can be chosen. The highest point on this route reaches approximately 1288 meters. Before setting out for a hike, do not forget to prepare appropriate boots, sufficient water, and food.
How Many Days to Allocate
For those who only want to explore the plateau and spend time around the pond, a day trip is sufficient. If you plan to do the Karagöl–Acelle hike or embark on the 7 plateaus 5 ponds tour, staying for 1–2 nights by camping allows you to comfortably complete the route and experience the morning tranquility of the plateau.
Food and Drink
There is no regular restaurant or market infrastructure on Acelle Plateau. You need to stock up on food, drinks, and fuel from Akyazı town center before heading up to the plateau. If you are camping, do not forget to bring a portable stove and sufficient provisions. Local restaurants and markets are available in Akyazı.
Photography Spots
The pond in the west of the plateau offers powerful photo opportunities with forest reflections. In the morning hours, mist hangs over the forest canopy; this period is the most productive in terms of both light and atmosphere. Rhododendron communities and various plateau crossings encountered along the Karagöl–Acelle trail are also highly photogenic spots. A wide-angle lens and a polarizing filter will be useful in this environment.
Things to Consider
The final sections of the road leading to the plateau may have gravel dirt sections; in rainy weather, these parts can be muddy and slippery. Using a high-clearance vehicle increases safety. When lighting a fire in the camping area, be careful about the risk of forest fires and adhere to local rules. GSM signal on the plateau may be weak or non-existent; complete important communications while in lower areas. Make it a habit to take your trash with you.
