İnönü Plateau is a plateau area covered with pine trees, located at a high altitude in the Pamukova district of Sakarya province. Approximately 46 kilometers from the city center, the plateau is accessible within a 2-hour drive from Istanbul. This area, which has no facilities, markets, or electricity connections, stands out for those seeking an untouched nature experience. Visitors state that there is a clean water source on the plateau, and it is permitted to light fires and set up barbecues; it is also possible to find firewood in the forest.
Campers report that even in July, the thermometer drops to 8 degrees in the morning; they particularly emphasize that it is difficult to spend the night without a sleeping bag and warm clothes. Phone signal is almost non-existent; this is a disadvantage for some, but for others, it means the digital detox they are looking for. Another issue highlighted in comments is some groups playing loud music and gunshots at night. Choosing weekdays offers a much calmer experience. Visitors also share that traces of wild animals can be seen, and even wolf howls can be heard at night.
The condition of the road to the plateau varies depending on where you come from. The route from Pamukova is longer but relatively smoother; the route via Çilekli and Hüseyinli villages has a shorter section of bad asphalt. On the Yuvacık-Tepecik route, the last 15 kilometers are a gravel and potholed road; passenger cars can pass but caution is required. There are toilets on the plateau, but visitors say they are inadequate and poorly maintained. There are no trash containers; you need to carry your trash to Çilekli village.

Guide's Note
When to Visit?
The most suitable period for İnönü Plateau is the late spring and summer months, extending from May to September. In May, the weather is still cool, and the forest is freshly green; it's a very pleasant time for campers. Between June and August, the plateau sees the most visitor traffic; weekends can be crowded. If you want a calmer experience, choosing weekdays is sensible.
In autumn, the number of visitors significantly decreases. During this period, when the forest changes color, the plateau becomes deserted; it's an ideal time for those who love silence. In winter, the pine forests are covered with snow, creating a visually impressive scene; however, roads become difficult, and going unprepared is not recommended. Be prepared for cold nights in every season; temperatures can drop to 8 degrees even in July mornings.
How to Get There?
There are multiple routes to reach İnönü Plateau, and your choice directly affects both road quality and distance.
Pamukova route: Longer in terms of kilometers but the road quality is relatively better. A preferable option for first-time visitors.
Çilekli-Hüseyinli villages route: The bad asphalt section is shorter; this is the route recommended by visitors familiar with the plateau. It's also possible to connect to this route via Sultaniye.
Yuvacık-Tepecik route: After Tepecik, the asphalt ends, and approximately 15 kilometers of gravel, potholed road begins. Passenger cars can pass, but those with low ground clearance should be careful. Visitors report getting their vehicles stuck on this route.
It's about a 2-hour journey from Istanbul. Going by car is much more practical; although public transport within the city can provide access, the comfort difference is significant. We recommend confirming road conditions from up-to-date sources before you go.
How Many Days to Stay?
A day trip is possible; however, considering the road conditions, if you are coming from far away, staying for at least 1 night of camping offers a more efficient experience. The hiking trail is 12 kilometers and takes approximately 4 hours; adding time for setting up camp, preparing food, and resting, 1-2 nights is ideal.
If you are coming from nearby areas like İzmit or Sakarya, a day trip picnic is also worthwhile. If you are starting from a more distant point outside Istanbul, planning at least 1 night is more sensible to balance the tiring journey and the load on the vehicle.
Photo Spots
İnönü Plateau offers impressive photo opportunities, especially in the morning hours when fog and clouds spread through the forest. Visitors describe feeling like they are passing through clouds in foggy weather; these moments are extremely atmospheric for both photos and videos.
The morning light filtering through the pine trees is ideal for wide-angle shots unique to the plateau. In autumn, the forest, which turns yellow-orange, also attracts photography enthusiasts. It is also a suitable area for night sky photography; light pollution is almost non-existent, and the surroundings remain quite dark.
Things to Pay Attention To
Cold: Even in mid-summer, the weather gets seriously cold at night and in the morning. Make sure to have a sleeping bag, fleece, and raincoat in your bag. It can be freezing in late May mornings.
No signal: Phone signal is almost non-existent. Make your emergency plan in advance, and inform your relatives where you are going.
No facilities: There are no markets, grocery stores, electricity connections. A water source is available, but carry enough drinking water with you just in case. Toilets exist, but visitors say they are inadequate and poorly maintained; be prepared for this.
Night noise: Some visitors complain about gunshots and loud music continuing late into the night, especially on weekends. You can expect a calmer environment on weekdays.
Trash: There are no trash containers on the plateau. Carry your trash to Çilekli village; it is everyone's responsibility to leave nature clean.
Wild animals: Traces of wild animals can be seen, and wolf howls can be heard at night. Store your food securely.
What to Eat, Where to Eat?
There are no food and beverage facilities on İnönü Plateau. Barbecuing and lighting fires are allowed; it is possible to find firewood in the forest. If you prepare and bring your ingredients beforehand, you can enjoy a barbecue in the forest; the lack of facilities turns into an advantage in this regard.
The nearest market and grocery store are in Çilekli village or Pamukova district center. You need to stock up on all your provisions before heading up to the plateau. Since Çilekli village also has trash containers, you can leave your trash there on your way back.
Route Suggestion
If you are starting from Istanbul or Sakarya, you can consider the following route: Pamukova district center → Çilekli village → Hüseyinli village → İnönü Plateau. This route minimizes the bad road section and offers the opportunity to take a break in Çilekli village on both the way there and back.
After arriving at the plateau, allow approximately 4 hours to complete the 12-kilometer hiking trail. The trail is easy level and does not involve water crossings; it can be easily done in spring, summer, and autumn. For camping, choose previously used fire spots in the forest; avoid creating new fire pits.
