Sulucaova Plateau

The most suitable period for Sulucaova Plateau is the summer season, extending from early June to late September. During these months, the pine and beech forests reach their densest greenery, and the weather remains 5–8 degrees cooler compared to the city. Ideal conditions for picnics and camping occur precisely during this period.

From October onwards, the weather cools rapidly, and road conditions become difficult accordingly. Access to the plateau can become challenging in winter months when it is covered in snow. In spring, the forests come alive; however, dirt roads can be muddy during rainy periods. If you plan to complete the hiking trail, July–August will be the most favorable choice in terms of both weather and ground conditions.

The most practical way to reach Sulucaova Plateau is by private vehicle. You can reach the plateau by driving from Sakarya city center towards Akyazı and then proceeding approximately 22 km via Beldibi. The total distance from the city center is about 50 km.

Public transportation options are quite limited. There is a bus connection to Akyazı; however, there is no regular service from there to the plateau. Therefore, consider renting a car or coming by private vehicle. It is advisable to confirm with an official source before setting off.

The most preferred hiking route in Sulucaova is the circular trail between Küçük Karapınar Plateau and Sulucaova. This trail, with a total distance of approximately 13.56 km, involves an altitude gain of 319 meters and an equal amount of altitude loss; it is a suitable route for hikers with moderate fitness.

Along the trail, pine forests, the wooden houses of the plateau village, and open meadows follow one another. On the route between Akyazı Sulucaova and Yörükyeri plateaus, forest roads connect two different plateau villages. Before setting out for a hike, it is important to prepare appropriate boots or hiking shoes, sufficient water, and snacks; there is no regular resupply point on the plateau.

For just a picnic and a short nature trip, a single-day visit is sufficient. You can have a relaxed day by leaving Sakarya center in the morning and returning in the afternoon.

For those who want to complete the hiking trail, camp, or see other nearby plateaus, an overnight stay is a much more fulfilling option. There is a camping area on the plateau; however, you need to research accommodation facilities in advance and bring the necessary equipment with you.

Sulucaova Plateau offers rich scenes for photography, especially in mid-summer. The corridors formed by pine and beech forests create natural frames along the hiking trail. The wooden structures in the plateau village and the surrounding open meadows are indispensable elements for capturing rural life.

The light falling on the forest in the morning creates a beautiful atmosphere for long exposure and silhouette photos. In early autumn, when the leaves change color, the plateau takes on a different beauty; during this season, it is necessary to check road conditions before setting off.

Since Sulucaova is located at an altitude of approximately 1000 meters, weather conditions can be more variable compared to the city. Even in summer, sudden weather changes can occur; don't forget to bring a light raincoat or an extra layer of clothing.

As the plateau is a natural area, infrastructure facilities are quite limited. Make sure to bring enough drinking water, food, and first aid supplies. When lighting a campfire, be careful about the risk of fire in forested areas and follow local rules. Contribute to keeping nature clean by taking your trash back with you.
