Soğucak Plateau

The best time to visit Soğucak Plateau is during July and August. During this period, the plateau is at its greenest, and annual plateau festivals are held. The festivals include camping, mountain hikes, and off-road activities.

In spring and autumn, due to rain, the roads can become muddy and difficult to pass. In winter, access is almost impossible. Even in summer, night temperatures drop significantly; visitors emphasize that it gets very cold at night, so those planning to camp should consider this.

There are multiple ways to reach the plateau. The most common route is the approximately 15 km stabilized road from Sapanca to the Köprübaşı area, then via the Memnuniye neighborhood. Alternatively, the Muradiye-Balkaya route can also be preferred; visitors state that both roads have similar conditions.

The distance from Sakarya city center is about 35 km, and from Sapanca town center, it's around 17-20 km. Public transport connections are extremely limited, so coming by private vehicle is almost mandatory. In rainy weather, roads turn muddy, and standard vehicles struggle to pass; if possible, choose a 4x4 or high-traction vehicle.

Soğucak Plateau, especially in summer, delights photography enthusiasts with its deep green color. The plateau's wide open terrain, the forest strip stretching in the background, and the hills overlooking the valley are very suitable for panoramic shots. In the morning, fog can hang over the plateau; photos taken at these times capture a completely different atmosphere.

For those who want to traverse the small green hills with motorized vehicles, there are plenty of opportunities for both action and landscape photography. The surrounding streams and cave entrances also create a separate point of interest for nature photographers.

There is an establishment on the plateau that serves breakfast; however, visitors state that the menu is limited and breakfast ends at 12:00 PM. For those who want a more comprehensive dining experience, it is much more practical to shop in Sapanca town center before coming to the plateau or to bring picnic supplies with them.

Barbecuing is very common on the plateau; the wide open space allows for it. Don't forget to take your trash with you and leave nature clean.

Road conditions: In rainy weather, dirt roads turn muddy, and passing with standard vehicles becomes difficult. Check the weather forecast beforehand.

Cold weather: Even in summer, it can be cool during the day and quite cold at night. A sleeping bag and warm clothes are essential for campers.

Toilet: There is a portable toilet on the plateau, but its condition is not good. Campers should consider this beforehand.

Respect for nature: Always take your trash with you; preserving the untouched nature of the plateau is the shared responsibility of visitors.

Soğucak Plateau can easily be visited as a day trip from Istanbul or Sakarya. 3-5 hours are sufficient for a picnic and nature walk. For those who want to complete the approximately 12-kilometer nature walk route, it is reasonable to allow an additional half-day.

For those who truly want to feel the atmosphere of the plateau and enjoy the starry sky, a 1-2 night camping trip offers a much more fulfilling experience. In this case, you should have sufficient camping equipment and food supplies with you.
