Mor Aho Monastery is a rectangular-plan stone structure from the Syriacs, located near Üçyol village, part of Batman's Hasankeyf district, restored in 2018; as its gate is often closed, it's advisable to get local information before visiting.
Mor Aho Monastery stands in the rural area called Bani Mahar, approximately 2 kilometers north of the village of Üçyol, which is part of Batman's Hasankeyf district. It is also known locally as Deyr Mahar or Mahar Church. Since no inscription indicating its construction date has been found, the exact time of its establishment is uncertain. Sources point to the period of early Syriac dominance in Hasankeyf, while some local narratives speak of a history extending back to the 6th century.
The structure has a rectangular plan, built with cut stone and rubble masonry using gypsum (slaked lime) mortar. There are no other structures around it apart from agricultural land, which in a way leaves the monastery isolated. There is a water well in its garden; on the banks of the Tigris, there is also an orchard called Attafiye Gardens, believed to belong to the monastery. As the community gradually left the region, the structure remained derelict for a long time, then the Ministry of Culture and Tourism registered and protected it. It underwent restoration in 2018 and was opened to tourism.
According to visitor comments, the restoration is still not considered fully complete. Some write that they found it similar to the Syriac monasteries in Mardin, while others state that some sections have a newly built feel. There is a common point: the gate is often locked. While some mention that village children opened it, others found it closed even at noon and turned back. The visiting time is short, half an hour to an hour is sufficient.

Guide's Note
When to Visit
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons. In summer, the heat of Southeast Anatolia, especially in the afternoon, makes visiting tiring. Since there is no structure around the monastery to provide shade, it is more logical to prefer morning hours. In winter, access to the region may be affected by rain, so it is useful to inquire about road conditions beforehand.
How to Get There
From Hasankeyf district center, it's a few kilometers to Üçyol village, and then another 2 kilometers to the monastery. If you don't have your own car, renting a car from Hasankeyf or arranging with a local guide is the easiest way. One visitor advises against the route coming over Kira mountain, stating that coming from the Üçyol village side is more comfortable. Public transport does not reach this point.
How Much Time to Allocate
The structure is small-scale, consisting of a single rectangular-plan building and its garden. Half an hour to an hour is sufficient for exploring. You can add it as a half-day extension to your Hasankeyf trip.
Route Suggestion
Combining Mor Aho Monastery with your Hasankeyf visit is the most practical plan. You can visit Hasankeyf in the morning, then go to the monastery in the afternoon, and return to Batman city center. There are other Syriac structures in the region, such as Mor Kiryakus Monastery. Planning both in a single day might be a bit tiring but possible.
Things to Note
The most frequent complaint in visitor comments is finding the gate locked. Some found it closed even at noon, while others mention that one of the village children opened the gate. Inquiring about the current situation from the tourism information point in Hasankeyf or a local guide before you go will prevent wasted time. Some also state that the restoration is not fully settled in some sections, and the newly built parts do not fully match the old texture.
Good Spots for Photography
The texture of the stone walls appears more distinct, especially when photographed with side lighting before noon. The water well in the garden and the surrounding agricultural lands are suitable for shots showing the rural isolation of the structure. The absence of other structures around the monastery allows for wide-angle shots that frame the building in a solitary and impressive way.
Things to Know About the Monastery
Since no inscription proving its construction date has been found, the exact age of the structure is debatable. Some sources refer to the early Syriac period, while some local narratives date the structure to approximately the 6th century. The structure has been registered by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and was restored in 2018. Having remained derelict for a long time after the community left the region, the structure is now open to tourism, but its operational system is not as established as a museum. Therefore, it is important to get information before visiting.
