The official name of Batman Museum is Mehmet Cabir Alper Archaeology Museum. It is located on the south facade of the Cultural Center complex in the city center. The building has two floors, and its entrance is separate from the main gate of the cultural center. Opened in 2010, the museum conducts rescue excavations in the mounds that will be submerged under the waters of the Ilısu Dam; most of the exhibited artifacts come from these sites.
There are three halls: Paleolithic-Neolithic, Ilısu, and Hasankeyf. The game stones found at Başur Höyük are the most well-known pieces of the museum. These are complemented by a stele from Gusir Höyük, bronze grave gifts from Başur Höyük, and a figurine of the god Bes from Hasankeyf. The museum is open every day except Monday from 08:00-17:00, with the ticket office closing at 16:30. There are fewer visitors in the morning hours. How to Get There?
The museum is located within the Cultural Center complex in Belde Mahallesi, on Barış Boulevard. From the city center, you can get off at a nearby stop using bus lines 5, 12, 16, and 18. If you are going by your own car, remember that there is no dedicated parking for the museum; you may need to look for parking on surrounding streets.
How Much Time Should You Allocate?
45 minutes to 1 hour is sufficient, including the three halls and the Museum Park section in the garden. If you also watch the documentary projection room, you can extend the duration a bit. If you are planning a one-day trip to Batman, it makes sense to add the museum at the beginning or end of your Hasankeyf or Malabadi Bridge route.
