Malabadi Bridge

The best period to visit Malabadi Bridge is the spring months, especially March and April. The Batman River flows abundantly during this period; when the turquoise color of the water combines with the stone texture of the bridge, a truly impressive scene emerges. Visitors who come in spring particularly emphasize that the bridge looks completely different in that season.

In summer, the water level drops; the bridge can still be visited, and architectural details are more clearly visible. In winter, the weather in the region can be cold and rainy; it is advisable to check the weather forecast before setting off.

Although the bridge is within the provincial borders of Diyarbakır, it is quite far from the city center. It is approximately 96 km (1 hour 15 minutes) from Diyarbakır city center and approximately 32 km from Batman city center. It is located 22 kilometers east of the Silvan district.

The most practical way to get there is by private car. Since the bridge is located on the D955 highway route, it is on the way for those traveling between Diyarbakır and Batman. Parking is available, and visitors state that they do not experience any problems in this regard.

The Malabadi Bridge is a very rich place for photography. To get the best angle covering the entire width of the arch, you need to go under the bridge, by the water's edge. From here, the 40.86-meter arch can be framed in all its splendor.

Photos taken from above the bridge offer the Batman River valley and the surrounding nature as a beautiful background. In spring, the turquoise color of the water creates an extraordinary reflection effect, especially in shots taken from below. The narrow windows of the historical rooms in the bridge piers also offer an interesting composition; you might want to try a shot looking out from a window.

The Malabadi Bridge was built by Artuqid Timurtaş in 1147-1148. As one of the important architectural legacies of the Artuqid Beylik in this region, the bridge is approximately 150 meters long and, with its 40.86-meter main arch, is the structure with the widest arch among stone bridges in Turkey and the Near East.

An interesting legend circulates about the origin of the bridge's name: it is said that the name of the master who completed the construction was Bad, and the bridge means "Bad's house." One of the most unique features of the structure is the rooms located inside its two piers. These rooms were built for caravan travelers to rest and protect themselves from external dangers. Positioned on a caravan route centuries ago, the bridge is an advanced structure of its time, both functionally and architecturally.

There are tea gardens and small cafes right near the bridge. Visitors state that after touring the bridge, they can sit and relax in these places and watch the bridge. It is a very suitable spot for a short break after a long journey.

For a more comprehensive dining experience, you need to go to the Silvan district center or Batman city center. The unique flavors of Diyarbakır cuisine, such as liver kebab, stuffed ribs, and perde pilav (pilaf with a pastry crust), can be found in both Silvan and Batman.

Since the bridge is located on the highway between Diyarbakır and Batman, many drivers pass by it unknowingly. If you are passing through the region, be sure to add it to your itinerary; visitors emphasize that missing this spot would be a great loss.
