Hasankeyf Grand Palace is a 14,000 square meter palace complex located at the highest point of the Inner Castle in Batman; it stands out with its views of the Tigris Valley and the Ilısu Dam Lake.
Hasankeyf Grand Palace is a complex of structures located in the north of the Inner Castle, at the most dominant point of the castle. Spanning approximately 14,000 square meters, its location offers panoramic views of the Tigris River, the valley, and what is now the Ilısu Dam Lake. Most visitors who climb to the castle do so primarily for this view. The palace ruins concretely show where Hasankeyf's administrative center was established.
Hasankeyf is considered one of Mesopotamia's oldest cities, with a 12,000-year history of settlement. The Grand Palace, built at the highest part of the castle within this long history, represents the administrative and military power of its era. While many historical artifacts in the region were moved to a new settlement area approximately 3 kilometers away due to the dam project, the Inner Castle and the palace ruins remain in their original location on the hill.
Climbing to the castle requires some walking; it is not a flat stroll. But at the top, it is possible to see the traces of the old structure and grasp the vastness of the Tigris Valley. For those who want to take photos, hours close to sunset stand out as the moment when the light hits the valley.

Guide's Note
Best Time to Visit
Spring and autumn months are recommended for visiting Hasankeyf. In summer, temperatures in the region are high, and walking can become difficult, especially during midday, as the climb to the castle is uphill. Early morning or late afternoon hours are more suitable to avoid the heat and to see the light hitting the valley.
Transportation to Hasankeyf and the Grand Palace
The distance from Batman city center to Hasankeyf is approximately 40 kilometers. You can reach the district by your own vehicle or by minibuses departing from Batman. After arriving in Hasankeyf, some walking is required to reach the Inner Castle, where the Grand Palace is located. The castle entrance is usually part of the route organized with the Archaeopark and museum area.
How Much Time to Allocate
1-1.5 hours is sufficient for just the Grand Palace and Inner Castle. However, it doesn't make much sense to go to Hasankeyf and only see the castle; the Archaeopark, the new museum area with relocated artifacts, and the rock tombs are also in the same region. If you want to visit these together, it's better to plan for half a day.
Its Place in the Hasankeyf Travel Itinerary
The Grand Palace can be considered the highlight of a Hasankeyf trip. Generally, the route works like this: first, visit the museum in the new settlement area, then move to old Hasankeyf and climb to the castle. At the highest point of the castle, the Grand Palace ruins and that view await you. On the way down, there is also an opportunity to see the structures carved into the rocks and the banks of the Tigris.
Best Spots for Photography
Due to the location of the Grand Palace, the most striking shot is taken from the angle overlooking the valley and the dam lake. It is possible to capture the ruins of the castle walls and the wide valley in the background within the same frame. Hours close to sunset can be preferred due to the angle at which the light hits the valley.
Things to Note Before Visiting
The ascent to the castle is via an uneven and uphill path; access with wheelchairs or strollers is not possible. Comfortable and non-slip shoes are important. In summer, it is necessary to carry water and a hat, as shaded areas are limited.
