Sultandağı Caravanserai (Sahipata Caravanserai)

Sultandağı has an inner Anatolian climate, so summers can be hot, and winters cold and snowy. The most comfortable period to visit the caravanserai is April-May and September-October; during these seasons, the weather is cool and sunny, and the light is also ideal for taking photos of the stone structure. In mid-summer, the sun can be quite scorching in the open courtyard during midday; choosing early morning or late afternoon hours will make your visit much more enjoyable.

The most practical way to reach the caravanserai is by passenger minibuses departing from Afyonkarahisar city center; this journey of approximately 68-70 km can be made with regular hourly services. For those coming from Konya, Sultandağı is only about 20 km away and easily accessible via the Afyon-Konya highway. From Akşehir, the distance is approximately 25 km. Upon arrival in Sultandağı district center, the caravanserai is located right next to the Bazaar Mosque, making it accessible on foot. For those arriving by private car, finding parking in the district center is usually not a problem.

Sahipata Caravanserai was built in 1249 by Fahreddin Ali bin Hüseyin, one of the powerful beys of the II. Izzeddin Keykavus period. Also known as İshaklı Caravanserai among the public, the structure takes its name from its founder's epithet, Sahipata. The caravanserai is arranged around an open courtyard on a nearly square plan, and this plan type is one of the typical features of the Anatolian Seljuk caravanserai tradition. The monumental gate providing entry to the structure features geometric and floral decorations reflecting the fine craftsmanship of Seljuk stone masters. Located on the historical Akşehir-Çay route, the caravanserai was an important accommodation and resting point on the trade routes crossing Anatolia in the Middle Ages.

The most striking photo spot of the caravanserai is undoubtedly the monumental gate; the geometric decorations of Seljuk stone craftsmanship take on golden tones in the morning light or before sunset, offering extremely impressive shots. Looking up from inside the courtyard, the stone walls framed by the open sky also create an interesting composition. For those who want to capture the general view of the structure and the historical texture around it, wide-angle shots taken together with the Bazaar Mosque reflect the historical silhouette of Sultandağı. It is possible to catch the best light during the day in the early morning or in the afternoon.

Although Sultandağı is a small district of Afyonkarahisar province, there are several options to taste local delicacies in its vicinity. Sausage and pastrami, symbols of Afyonkarahisar cuisine, and the famous clotted cream (kaymak) can be found everywhere in the region. In small restaurants in the district center, homemade Anatolian dishes, especially traditional recipes like etli ekmek (meat bread) and tirit, can be found. Those who want a more comprehensive gastronomic experience can prefer Afyonkarahisar city center, which is about 68 km away; there, both sausage-pastrami shops and kaymak breakfast salons are quite abundant.

Before visiting the caravanserai, we recommend confirming the operating hours and current status with the Sultandağı District Governorship or via the contact number; maintenance and restoration work on historical structures can sometimes restrict visits. Since the stone floors of the structure may be uneven, wearing comfortable and sturdy-soled shoes will make your visit easier. Wheelchair or stroller use may be difficult due to the existing physical conditions of the structure. As the caravanserai is located in the district center, it is possible to find ATMs or markets nearby, but for major shopping, it is recommended to go to Afyonkarahisar.

To make your visit to Sultandağı more efficient, we recommend combining the caravanserai with the adjacent Bazaar Mosque and the Stone Bath (Taş Hamam) in the district center; since these three structures are within walking distance of each other, a half-day historical tour can be easily done. For those who want to explore the surroundings of Sultandağı from a broader perspective, Deliklikaya, located in the Yeşilçiftlik town, stands out as an interesting natural stop. For the rest of the day, you can return to Afyonkarahisar city center and add Afyon Castle, the Archaeology Museum, and the historical bazaar to your itinerary.
