Avdalaz Castle

Avdalaz Castle is a unique structure that does not fully fit the definition of an ordinary castle, but is rather considered a multi-story settlement carved into rock. Shaped on a rock mass elevated above its surroundings, this structure features rooms, corridors, and tunnels connected to each other, creating the appearance of a city hidden within nature. Believed to have been used by the Phrygians for both defense and shelter, the castle is known to have continued its function in later periods by Roman and Byzantine civilizations. This long history of use transforms the structure from a mere military building into a window opening to Anatolia's multi-layered history.

Spring and autumn are by far the most suitable seasons to visit Avdalaz Castle. In the period from March to May, you will see the valley turn green, and the landscape transform with wild flowers blooming among the rocks. September-November similarly offers a pleasant visit with mild weather and fewer crowds.

In summer, the Afyonkarahisar region can be quite hot; if you go during this period, it is important to choose early morning hours, bring plenty of water, and protect yourself from the sun. For winter visits, keep in mind that rocky surfaces can be wet and slippery, and some passages may become difficult.

The easiest way to reach the castle is by private car. From Afyonkarahisar city center, you can reach İhsaniye district, then Ayazini village, and from there, the castle is approximately 2 km northwest of the village. Along the way, the natural beauties of the Phrygian Valley will greet you.

For those preferring public transport, there are regular minibus services from Afyonkarahisar to İhsaniye; however, a taxi or private car may be needed to get from İhsaniye to Ayazini village. If you plan to tour the Phrygian Valley route by car, combining Avdalaz Castle with Ayazini Church and other Phrygian sites on the same day will be logical in terms of both time and fuel.

While it is possible to visit Avdalaz Castle alone, the real pleasure lies in exploring it as part of the Phrygian Valley route. Monuments from the Phrygian period such as Ayazini Church, Maltaş Monument, Aslantaş, and Yılantaş, located on the same route or nearby, greatly enrich this itinerary.

First, you can visit Ayazini Village to see its texture and church, then proceed to Avdalaz Castle on foot or by car. If you have more time, you can also stop at other points along the Göynüş Valley to spend a full Phrygian day. It is recommended to allocate approximately half to a full day to complete the route.

Avdalaz Castle is truly a treasure for photography enthusiasts. The entrances to the rock-cut rooms offer impressive shots with their unique atmosphere where light and shadow intertwine. When you climb to the upper levels of the castle, a panoramic view of Göynüş Valley greets you; wide-angle photos taken from this point capture both nature and history together.

In the early morning hours or in the afternoon when the sun is low, soft light best reveals the depth of the rock texture and the shadowy atmosphere of the carved spaces. Shots taken from inside the tunnels looking outwards also create a very dramatic effect. A wide-angle lens or a smartphone's ultra-wide mode provides a great advantage in such places.

Avdalaz Castle is not a maintained museum area, but an open-air archaeological site. Therefore, taking some practical precautions will make your visit both safe and comfortable. Due to the rocky and sloping terrain, sturdy, non-slip hiking shoes are essential; you may struggle in indoor areas with sandals or flat-soled shoes.

We recommend bringing sufficient water and light snacks; there may not be a readily accessible market or cafe nearby. Some parts of the castle consist of narrow and low passages, so supervision is essential for families with children. Also, to avoid damaging the historical structure, writing on carved surfaces or breaking stones should be strictly avoided.

It may be difficult to find dining options immediately around Avdalaz Castle. The safest option is to eat in İhsaniye town center or Afyonkarahisar city center before your visit. Afyonkarahisar holds a special place on Turkey's gastronomy map; you should not leave without tasting local delicacies, especially sucuk (spicy sausage), pastırma (cured beef), and kaymak (clotted cream).

In local restaurants in the city center, you can find Afyon-style tirit and various meat dishes. For dessert, Afyon kaymaklı ekmek kadayıfı (bread pudding with clotted cream) or milk-based desserts will leave a lasting impression. The idea of having a picnic along the route can also be appealing; taking a break in the natural environment of Göynüş Valley offers a complementary experience to your visit.
