Republic Martyrs' Cemetery

The Republic Martyrs' Cemetery is located at the exit of Afyonkarahisar towards İzmir, approximately 9-10 km from the city center. The area was built in memory of soldiers who fell as martyrs while serving in the 13th Regiment and 20th Regiment during the War of Independence in 1922. The memorial site features a bust of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, statues depicting Turkish soldiers, and inscriptions with the names of the martyrs. Visitors can wander among these structures, breathing in a historical atmosphere and feeling more closely the price paid on the path to the establishment of the Republic of Turkey.

It is possible to visit the cemetery throughout the year; however, weather conditions are most favorable in spring and autumn. In summer, the area can be quite hot during midday; visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon provides a more comfortable experience. The cemetery gains special significance during the August 30 Victory Day ceremonies; memorial events held on these dates transform the visit into a much deeper and more emotional experience. March 18 Çanakkale Victory and Martyrs' Commemoration Day are also among the periods when the cemetery sees heavy visitation.

The cemetery is located on the İzmir-Antalya highway, at the Çakır Village junction, 9-10 km from Afyonkarahisar city center. Coming by private car is the most practical option; as it is on the highway, following the signs is sufficient. It can also be easily reached by taxi from the city center. For those wishing to come by public transport, bus routes going towards İzmir can be considered; however, since there may not be a stop directly in front of the cemetery, it is recommended to prefer a private car or taxi.

Start your day with Afyonkarahisar Castle in the city center, then visit the Victory Museum. The Atatürk bust and soldier statues at the cemetery allow for impressive photographs to be taken in the morning light. Afyon sucuk (spicy sausage) and kaymak (clotted cream) are among the city's most well-known gastronomic values; fresh kaymak and honey should definitely be tried for breakfast. Traditional patisseries in the city center are ideal stops for Afyon lokum (Turkish delight) and various desserts. For lunch or dinner, lamb tandoori and local meat dishes can be preferred at restaurants on the market street.
