A Day in Izmir: A Route from History to Nature

For those who want to experience Izmir in one day, I have prepared a route that brings together the city's most iconic spots. You will start from the history-filled streets of Kemeraltı Bazaar, mingle with the crowd of Konak Square, then breathe the cool air of Kordonboyu, and end your day in the peace of İnciraltı Urban Forest. This route offers both the cultural richness and natural beauty of Izmir.

Hisar Mosque

Located in the heart of Kemeraltı Bazaar, Hisar Mosque was built by Yakup Bey in 1597-1598. It holds the distinction of being Izmir's largest Ottoman mosque. Its large dome, rising on eight elephant feet, and delicate tile decorations showcase the grandeur of the structure. When you step inside, away from the bustling atmosphere of the bazaar, you will find yourself in a completely different ambiance.

Havra Street and Synagogues

A few steps from Hisar Mosque, discover Havra Street, hidden in the narrow streets of Kemeraltı. This has been the center of Izmir's Jewish community for centuries. Synagogues such as Bikur Holim, Etz Hayim, Shalom, and Algazi bear the most concrete traces of the Jewish heritage that has survived from the Ottoman period to the present day. As you walk along the street, you will witness the city's multicultural past.

Yalı Mosque (Konak Mosque)

When you reach Konak Square, you will see Yalı Mosque standing next to the Clock Tower. Built in 1748, this elegant octagonal, single-domed structure, despite its small size, is one of Izmir's symbols with its striking tile work. Its architecture, bearing Baroque influences, distinguishes it from other Ottoman mosques.

Alsancak Kordonboyu

After Konak Square, the route takes you to Alsancak Kordonboyu. This coastal strip, extending from Alsancak Port to Konak Pier, is one of Izmir's liveliest spots. Here you can walk, cycle, or have a drink while enjoying the bay view. Especially at sunset, Kordon shows Izmir's most beautiful face.

İnciraltı Urban Forest

As the last stop of the day, head to İnciraltı Urban Forest. This green area, located west of the city and close to the sea, offers you a peaceful break with its walking and cycling paths, lagoon, and bird sanctuaries. After a busy day, resting here and spending time intertwined with nature will be good for you. You can have a picnic and see the Barış Manço Bridge.

Public transportation is quite developed in central Izmir. You can easily explore Kemeraltı and Konak areas on foot. You can use the tram or bus along Kordonboyu. For transportation to İnciraltı Urban Forest, you can choose buses departing from Konak. For dinner, you can try the fish restaurants in Kordonboyu or the local eateries in Kemeraltı.
