Dönertaş Sebil

Dönertaş Sebil is one of the most important examples of sebil structures built in the Ottoman period for public drinking water in Izmir. The structure, dating back to 1814, was commissioned by Seyyid İsmail Rahmi Efendi; while maintaining the classical sebil tradition of the period with its square plan and single dome, the Baroque and Rococo decorations on its facade clearly show how Western influence permeated architecture. Standing in the middle of the intense commercial traffic in the historical bazaar area of Anafartalar Street, the structure holds a unique place in Izmir's urban memory.

Since Dönertaş Sebil is located outdoors, it can be visited at any time of the year. As Anafartalar Street is a very busy commercial axis throughout the day, early morning hours are the most suitable time for those who want to examine and photograph the structure comfortably. Thanks to Izmir's mild climate, spring and autumn months are ideal for both bazaar tours and historical exploration. Walking in the bazaar area during the midday heat in summer can be quite tiring; planning your visit before 9 AM or after 5 PM will make it much more enjoyable.

The easiest way to reach Dönertaş Sebil is to walk from the Izmir Metro Konak station; it is sufficient to walk approximately 5–10 minutes along Anafartalar Street from the station. You can also easily reach it by entering the street from Konak Square. It is also possible to come to Konak by İZBAN or bus from different parts of the city and then walk to the sebil. If you are coming by car, it would be more practical to choose one of the paid parking lots around Konak and walk; moving by car in the bazaar area will waste time.

The corner placement of Dönertaş Sebil allows it to be photographed from different angles. Shots taken from Osmanzade Yokuşu frame the sebil with the historical bazaar texture in the background. The morning light highlights the Baroque decorations on the marble surface of the structure; therefore, angles facing the east facade yield better results in the early morning hours. Framing the sebil as a whole with the perspective of the street using a wide-angle lens is also a frequently preferred composition. For those who want to reflect the lively atmosphere of the bazaar area, the crowded afternoon hours add a different color.

Anafartalar Street and its surroundings, where Dönertaş Sebil is located, are one of Izmir's oldest and busiest bazaar areas. There are many small businesses offering boyoz, gevrek, and Izmir-style breakfast in the Jewelers' Bazaar, Kemeraltı, and surrounding streets. Restaurants and buffets within the historical Kemeraltı Bazaar are practical options to relieve the fatigue of your trip. Stuffed mussels (midye dolma), kokoreç, and various street foods can also be easily found in this area. For lunch, the long-established artisan restaurants in the inner streets of Kemeraltı would be a good choice.

Dönertaş Sebil can be a natural part of a walking route covering historical sites in the Konak and Kemeraltı region. Starting from the Clock Tower in Konak Square, you can proceed along Anafartalar Street to reach Dönertaş Sebil, and then explore the historical texture of Kemeraltı Bazaar. The Jewelers' Bazaar, historical inns, and mosques within the bazaar constitute other stops on this route. The entire route can be completed in half a day to a full day; since the walking distances are short, you can proceed at a comfortable pace.

Dönertaş Sebil is a historical structure that can be freely visited from the outside; it is not possible to enter. As Anafartalar Street is a busy commercial axis throughout the day, it is recommended to pay attention to your valuables. If you are walking in the bazaar area, choose comfortable shoes; Osmanzade Yokuşu, as its name suggests, is a slightly inclined street. Be careful when taking photos as vehicle traffic around the structure can be heavy. Kemeraltı and its surroundings are quieter on Sundays, while they present a very lively appearance on weekdays.
