Klazomenai Ancient City

Klazomenai is an ancient Ionian city located on the southern coast of Izmir Bay, in the Iskele Neighborhood of Urla district. Klazomenai, counted among the famous twelve Ionian cities of the Ancient Greek world, extends along the northern coast of the Urla-Cesme peninsula. A part of the city is on the mainland, and a part is on Karantina Island offshore.

The area, bearing traces from 4000 BC in the Limantepe region, is defined as a city founded in the Iron Age. Ancient ruins can be seen today partly on Karantina Island, where the Urla bone hospital is located, and partly in agricultural lands close to the coast and by the sea.

The most suitable period to visit Klazomenai is April-May and September-October. During these periods, the weather is mild, the sun is not scorching, and visitor density is relatively low. Since the area is largely open-air, it can be quite hot in mid-summer, especially at noon.

If you have to go in the summer months, choose the early morning hours, preferably before 09:00. In winter months, the area is generally quiet; excavation works may slow down depending on the season. It is always a good idea to confirm whether the area is open before visiting.

By private car: From Izmir city center, use the Izmir-Cesme highway and take the Urla exit. Continue in the direction of Iskele Neighborhood to reach Klazomenai Ancient City. The total distance is approximately 38 km.

By public transport: From Izmir, you can go to Cumaovasi or Urla station by IZBAN, and from there, reach Iskele Neighborhood by inter-district minibuses. There are also buses departing from various points in Izmir to Urla. For the last distance, it may be necessary to use a taxi or minibus.

Urla, right next to Klazomenai, has become one of Izmir's most attractive districts in terms of gastronomy in recent years. In the district center and the Iskele region, there are fish restaurants serving fresh seafood, small eateries making local olive oil dishes, and boutique cafes.

Urla has a strong olive oil and viticulture culture; locally produced olive oils and local wines should definitely be tried. Tasting this deep-rooted production tradition at the table after seeing the olive oil workshops in the ancient city adds a special meaning to the trip.

Among the most productive spots for taking photos in Klazomenai are the theater ruins built on the hillside. The view opening to Izmir Bay from here offers very powerful shots, especially in the morning light. Wide-angle photos taken from the steps of the theater are ideal for capturing both the ruins and the bay in the same frame.

The stone structures of the olive oil workshops also create a beautiful area for documentary-style photos. If it is possible to cross to Karantina Island, the ruins on the island and the sea background also provide strong frames. The golden hour light before sunset highlights the texture of the stones in this open-air area.

Klazomenai is an active archaeological excavation site. Therefore, some areas may be closed from time to time or excavation teams may be working. Keep in mind that not all areas may always be accessible.

The ground is largely uneven and stony; comfortable walking shoes are essential. Shaded areas are quite limited, so don't forget to bring water, a hat, and sunscreen. Museum Pass holders may have an advantage at the entrance; it is healthiest to learn the current conditions on-site or through official channels.

Klazomenai can be combined with Urla district to create a beautiful full-day itinerary. Start by visiting Klazomenai Ancient City early in the morning; enjoy the view from the theater, examine the olive oil workshops. Then head to Urla Iskele for a breakfast or lunch break by the sea.

In the afternoon, you can visit Urla town center, its bazaar, and vineyard roads. Several local wine producers and olive oil workshops in the region also open their doors to visitors. Stopping by Seferihisar on the way back to Izmir also enriches the route.
