A 2-Day Journey Tracing History in Izmir

On this two-day route, we embark on a journey starting from the heart of the city, delving into the depths of history and its modern face. This plan, full of stops within walking distance and easily accessible by public transport, is for those who want to get to know the local culture up close and visit important museums. Kemeraltı Bazaar

You can't come to Izmir and not visit Kemeraltı. This is the city's most vibrant artery. This massive open-air bazaar, operating since the 17th century, spans an area of approximately 5 kilometers and contains more than 15,000 businesses. You can find everything from spice sellers to antique dealers, traditional handicrafts to modern shops. Getting lost in the streets of the bazaar is the best way to feel its rhythm. This labyrinth, full of historical mosques, inns, and small cafes, is like a living museum.

Kızlarağası Han

In the heart of Kemeraltı stands Kızlarağası Han, built in 1744. This magnificent two-story structure, once hosting Silk Road merchants, has today transformed into a tourist bazaar selling handicrafts, carpets, and souvenirs. Its spacious courtyard offers a tranquil spot to rest in the middle of the inn. It's an ideal stop, especially for enjoying coffee brewed on sand.

Abacıoğlu Han

Also within Kemeraltı, you'll find Abacıoğlu Han, another 18th-century Ottoman structure. The centuries-old plane tree in its courtyard adds a special atmosphere. Surrounded by small cafes and artisan shops, the inn is a calm and peaceful corner where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the bazaar and take a breath. Its recognition with an award in the Philippe Rotthier European Architecture Competition also demonstrates its architectural value.

Kestanepazarı Mosque

Another historical structure you'll encounter while wandering through Kemeraltı is the Kestanepazarı Mosque. Dating back to 1667-68, this Ottoman mosque stands out with its cut stone masonry and three-domed last congregation area. The historical shops on its lower floor present a unique example of the bazaar mosque tradition. The mosque's elegant stained glass windows and architectural details are worth seeing.

Şadırvanaltı Mosque (Şadırvan Mosque)

Located right next to Kestanepazarı Mosque, Şadırvanaltı Mosque stands out with its 17th-century fevkani architecture. Shops are on the ground floor, and the prayer area is on the upper floor. The ornate fountain in front of the mosque and the library above the fountain showcase the fine craftsmanship of the Ottoman period. This structure is like a hidden treasure in the streets of Kemeraltı.

Atatürk House Museum

Start your day on Kordon, with the Atatürk House Museum located on Atatürk Street. Inside, Atatürk's personal belongings and documents from the period are exhibited. The museum can be visited free of charge and is an ideal stop after a pleasant walk, with its prime location on Kordon.

Izmir History and Art Museum

A short walk from Kordon will take you into Kültürpark, where you'll find the Izmir History and Art Museum. This museum, exhibiting archaeological artifacts from the ancient periods of the Aegean and Anatolia, also draws attention with its large garden. Especially the ancient sculpture collection and the large stone artifacts displayed in the open air will allow you to journey into the past.

Izmir Painting and Sculpture Museum

Also located within Kültürpark, the Izmir Painting and Sculpture Museum houses a vast collection of Turkish painting and sculpture, spanning from the Tanzimat period to the present day. Here you can see the works of important figures in Turkish art and witness the artistic understanding of different periods. The museum offers a peaceful art experience within the green texture of Kültürpark.

Izmir International Fair Area (IEFF / Kültürpark)

After the museums, you can spend time in Kültürpark itself. This area, which hosts the Izmir International Fair, is one of the places where the city breathes, with its palm trees and vast green spaces. Even if it's not fair season, you can walk in the park, sit in cafes, or come across various events. The historical fair buildings are also worth seeing.

Latife Hanım Mansion Memorial House Museum

For the last stop of the second day, we head to Karşıyaka. The Latife Hanım Mansion Memorial House Museum was built in the 1860s by the Uşakizade Family and became Latife Hanım's family home. It also holds historical importance as the place where Atatürk's mother, Zübeyde Hanım, spent her last days. The mansion's original architecture and the period items exhibited inside will allow you to feel the atmosphere of those days.
