The Sofraz Monumental Tomb is an approximately 1800-year-old tumulus complex from the Commagene and Roman periods, located southeast of Sofraz Village in Adıyaman's Besni district; it houses limestone sarcophagi uncovered by excavations in 1993.
Located 45 kilometers from Adıyaman province and approximately 13-16 kilometers from Besni district, the Sofraz Monumental Tomb is considered among the most interesting archaeological remains in the region. The tumuli rising southeast of Sofraz Village are notable for their tomb chamber space, shaped like a hill with an earth-filled upper part. Sarcophagi carved from limestone, with their seals still intact today, are lined up in front of the east and west walls.
The area around Sofraz (Üçgöz) Village, with its layers extending to the Roman period and the Middle Ages, especially the Kingdom of Commagene, is one of the rare sites that simultaneously harbors traces left by different civilizations. Thanks to excavation works that began in 1993, the structures, separated as large and small tumuli, entered the agenda of the scientific world; targets were set to increase visitor interest in the region. This site, one of Adıyaman's lesser-known but equally valuable stops for archaeology and history enthusiasts, complements the cultural tourism route on the Mount Nemrut itinerary.

Guide's Note
Best Time to Visit
The most suitable times to visit Sofraz Monumental Tomb are April, May, September, and October. In spring, the surrounding lands turn green, and the mild weather makes outdoor walks enjoyable. In summer, due to the harsh heat of Southeast Anatolia, a field trip can be tiring; if you prefer this season, it would be wiser to choose the early morning hours. In winter, transportation difficulties may occasionally be experienced on village roads.
How to Get There
The most practical way to reach Sofraz Monumental Tomb is by private vehicle. After traveling approximately 45 kilometers from Adıyaman city center to Besni district, it is necessary to continue for another 13-16 kilometers in the direction of Sofraz Village (Üçgöz). You can search for Üçgöz Village or Sofraz Village on navigation apps; however, using up-to-date maps for village roads is important.
Since there may not be regular minibus or shared taxi services from Besni district to the village, car rental or an organized tour through Adıyaman-based tour operators can be preferred. For those who want to combine it with a visit to Mount Nemrut on the same day, planning the route in advance will save time.
Suggested Route: Adıyaman Cultural Itinerary
You can combine Sofraz Monumental Tomb with other archaeological stops in Adıyaman to create a rich day program. Visit Karakuş Tumulus early in the morning, then cross the Cendere Bridge and head towards Sofraz Village. In the afternoon, you can take a break in Besni district and taste local delicacies.
If you have more than one day, dedicating Mount Nemrut to a separate day will be more efficient both physically and experientially. Kahta district offers a central accommodation option for accessing all archaeological sites in the region.
Photography Spots
Sofraz Monumental Tomb offers a simple but impressive archaeological atmosphere. The earth-filled tumulus hill, along with the surrounding rural landscape, provides an ideal backdrop for wide-angle shots. The limestone sarcophagi inside the tomb chamber are quite interesting for detailed photography; close-up images of the seals and stone workmanship are the best frames reflecting the historical texture.
Low-angle sunlight in the morning and late afternoon creates distinct shadows and depth on the tumulus's earthen surface. For a wide landscape shot, a composition that includes the village area from a little distance from the tumulus can be attempted.
Things to Consider Before Visiting
Since the area is located away from the city center and within a village, it is recommended to refuel and stock up on water in advance. As there may not be comprehensive infrastructure in the village, it is safer to meet your food and drink needs from Besni district.
In the archaeological area, it is important not to touch sarcophagi or stone surfaces and not to climb on the structures, both for preservation and safety. Since the ground can be uneven and rocky, wearing sturdy walking shoes is recommended. Before your visit, you can call the Adıyaman Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism to learn about current access conditions.
Historical and Archaeological Significance
Sofraz Monumental Tomb is an important archaeological heritage site dating back approximately 1800 years ago, bearing traces of the Commagene Kingdom and the Roman period. Excavation works carried out in 1993 brought to light two separate structures in the region: the large tumulus and the small tumulus.
The upper part of the tomb chamber rises in the form of an earth-filled hill, and this type of structure is a characteristic reflection of the Commagene and Hellenistic-Roman synthesis. The limestone sarcophagi lined up in front of the east and west walls have largely survived to the present day with their seals intact. In the surrounding village, Ottoman and medieval remains are also found, making the area one of the rare places that simultaneously harbors layers from different periods.
