Galeriç Floodplain Forests

The best time to visit Galeriç Floodplain Forests is between March and May. During these months, water accumulated from winter rains covers the forest; tree roots rise in the water, water lilies bloom, and the entire area takes on a very different appearance from a familiar forest. By mid-summer, the water level drops significantly, which greatly affects the characteristic appearance of the forest. Early autumn can also be considered for birdwatching; the Kızılırmak Delta hosts hundreds of bird species during migration season.

Galeriç Floodplain Forests are located approximately 60 km from Samsun city center, in the Yörükler Neighborhood of the 19 Mayıs district. The most practical way to get here is by private car. From Samsun, follow the highway towards Bafra, then proceed to the 19 Mayıs district center; from there, continue towards Yörükler.

An important note: Some visitors state that map applications show the wrong location. When you reach the point indicated on the map, continue straight instead of turning right; you will see a sign on the right side of the road, which is the correct entrance point. For public transport, there are minibus services to the 19 Mayıs district, but a private car or taxi may be needed for the last few kilometers to the forest.

There are no cafes or restaurants within or immediately around the forest; visitor reviews also indicate that the cafe is not open. Bringing your own food and snacks is the healthiest option. There are various restaurants and small cafes in the 19 Mayıs district center; you can eat here before or after your visit. For those who want to taste Samsun cuisine, the local artisan restaurants in the district center are a good starting point.

When water levels rise in spring, it is possible to take photos framed by wooden boardwalks, tree trunks rising in the water, and water lilies. Morning hours are advantageous for mist and soft light. Those planning to use drones for wide-angle photography of the Kızılırmak Delta should research the necessary permits in advance. Encounters with wild horses and other wildlife can also provide striking photo opportunities; moving calmly and quietly is key in this regard.

Not all of the area is open to public access. A portion of the forest is private property, and farmers have fenced their lands. Therefore, using only the designated walking paths is the correct approach, both legally and ethically. Damaging fences or entering private lands can cause problems.

Infrastructure is not yet sufficiently developed; facilities such as seating areas, toilets, and trash bins are quite limited. Do not forget to take your trash with you. In rainy periods, the ground can be muddy, so waterproof boots or sturdy hiking shoes are recommended.

Galeriç Floodplain Forests are one of the areas promoted by the Samsun Governorship and 19 Mayıs District Governorship within the scope of nature tourism. Longoz forests are rare habitat types where trees adapt to living in water, thereby creating a unique ecosystem. There are only a few similar areas in Turkey; its location within the Kızılırmak Delta adds a distinct ecological value to Galeriç.

More than 35 plant species have been recorded in the forest; birds, reptiles, wild horses, and aquatic creatures coexist in this area. The area can be visited without an appointment and free of charge.

Galeriç Floodplain Forests are a stop for 1 to 2 hours for most visitors. Walking the wooden boardwalks from start to finish and taking photos easily fits within this time. If you are interested in birdwatching or nature photography, allocating half a day might be more productive. The forest can also be combined with other natural areas in the Kızılırmak Delta to create a full-day itinerary.
