Although kiztepe takes its name from two prominent mounds, it actually describes a much more comprehensive archaeological region. Located northwest of the Bafra district, right near the Kızılırmak Delta, this area houses countless historical elements such as 57 mounds, 6 flat settlement areas, 48 tumuli, rock tombs, a castle ruin, a historic hammam, and a bridge. It is one of the few places where such a dense concentration of archaeological evidence related to the prehistoric period of the Black Sea basin is found in a single region.

Systematic archaeological excavations at kiztepe began in 1974. The works, which continued intermittently for decades, ended once in 2012 and were restarted in 2021. During the excavations, settlement layers, grave finds, and remains of daily life belonging to a wide time span from the Early Bronze Age to the Iron Age were unearthed. These findings provide important clues about the lifestyles, trade networks, and cultural interactions of ancient communities along the northern coast of Anatolia.

The most suitable period to visit kiztepe is during the spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) months. During these seasons, the mild Black Sea weather makes walking among the mounds comfortable; there may also be a chance to closely observe the excavation works during active excavation periods. In summer months, humidity and temperature can rise, so it is advisable to prefer morning hours. In winter months, access to the region may become difficult due to muddy terrain.

From Samsun city center, travel approximately 60 km via the D010 highway to Bafra. After reaching the Bafra district center, you need to continue another 7 km to kiztepe Village. Using a private vehicle is the most practical option. There are regular bus services from Samsun to Bafra; however, it is recommended to inquire at the local terminal for public transport connections from Bafra to the village. The most striking photographic angles of kiztepe are obtained from the top of the mounds. From here, the vast view extending to the wetlands of the Kızılırmak Delta and the Black Sea creates an impressive sight, especially in the morning light. The silhouettes of the tumuli and the general view of the excavation areas are also suitable for documentary-style shots. A wide-angle lens will be useful for conveying the scale of the region.

Dining options immediately around kiztepe are quite limited. Upon returning to the Bafra district center, Bafra pide, a symbol of Black Sea cuisine, must be tried; with its thin dough and special filling, this pide is a flavor recognized throughout Turkey. In Bafra, there are also fish restaurants and small eateries serving traditional home-cooked meals. It is advisable to bring your own food and drinks before your visit.

Walking among the mounds and tumuli involves uneven and rough terrain; choose sturdy, closed-toe shoes. It is important not to enter active parts of the excavation areas; follow the directions of officials during periods when work is ongoing. Shade is very limited in the area, so sunscreen, a hat, and sufficient water should be with you.
