Hasankeyf Small Palace

Hasankeyf was an important administrative center during the Artuqid and then Ayyubid periods. The 12th-16th centuries are considered the golden age of the region. The Small Palace was one of the structures where the sultan resided and governed the state during this period. Its location within the castle, on a slope dominating both the valley and the old settlement below, is no coincidence: it was a strategic choice for security and surveillance.

Today, most of the structure has disappeared. A surviving iwan, according to some sources, was built during the Ayyubid period. The geometric and floral motifs remaining on the walls leave a concrete trace of the stone masonry of the era.

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for a trip to Hasankeyf. There is almost no shade on the stone ground inside the castle, and noon hours in summer are tiring. Going early protects from the heat and makes the valley light more suitable for photography.

From Batman city center, take the D955 highway towards Hasankeyf-Midyat, which is about 37-40 km, approximately a 40-minute drive. It is possible to reach by private car or by minibuses departing from Batman. Upon arriving in Hasankeyf, the walk to the castle begins from the Museum and Archaeological Site entrance; the Small Palace is in the upper parts of this walking route.

20-30 minutes is sufficient for the Small Palace itself, but it is not a place to visit alone. When considered with other ruins within the castle (mosque, tombs, caves), the entire castle tour takes 2-3 hours. For Hasankeyf in general, including the Archaeopark, museum, and new settlement, allocating half a day is realistic.

Starting from the castle entrance and first seeing the structures in the lower section, then climbing up the slope to see the Small Palace is a logical order. The points overlooking the Shaab Valley are among the most photogenic parts of the route. It is also possible to take a different path on the descent to get a closer look at the valley.

The palace's location on the slope allows for capturing both the structure itself and the valley view behind it in a single frame. The afternoon light brings out the motifs in the stone texture more clearly. In shots facing the valley, the curve of the Tigris River also enters the frame.

The walk inside the castle is not flat; it consists of stony and sometimes steep slopes. Sturdy shoes are essential, and it is not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs. In summer months, do not go out without water and a hat, as there is almost no shaded area.
