Hasankeyf Ancient City, located in Batman on the banks of the Tigris River, is an ancient city bearing traces of 12,000 years of settlement, featuring rock-carved cave houses and castle ruins, encompassing historical layers from the Roman to the Ottoman periods.
Hasankeyf takes its name from the Syriac "Hisnkayfa": rock fortress. This settlement, built on the banks of the Tigris River, contains layers from the Roman, Artuqid, Ayyubid, Akkoyunlu, and Ottoman periods. Hasankeyf Mound in the region is considered one of Anatolia's oldest Neolithic settlements. But today it is submerged under the waters of the Ilısu Dam.
The vital points of the ancient city are the cave houses carved into the rock and the castle ruins. There is no vehicle traffic at the entrance from the highway; visitors leave their vehicles at the head of the valley and walk to the castle. This walk is a pleasant nature walk for some, while for others, especially in hot months and with children, it is quite tiring. Some complain about the scarcity of descriptive signs or inscriptions along the way. You are left alone with just the ruins and the view.
The submergence of a part of old Hasankeyf under the dam waters has been the most talked-about topic among visitors to the region for many years. When to Visit?
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable months. In summer heat, the walking path is unshaded, making midday hours tiring; most visitors recommend going early in the morning or late in the afternoon. In winter, rain and wind can make the rocky path slippery, so pay attention to shoe selection.
How to Get There?
From Batman city center to Hasankeyf is approximately 37 km, taking 35-40 minutes by minibus. If you are going by your own car, the winding road ends at the head of the valley; there is no vehicle access beyond this point. You need to leave your car and walk to the castle. This distance is around 1-1.5 km and uphill, according to visitors.
How Long Does a Visit Take?
2-3 hours are sufficient for just the ancient city, including the walk and castle tour. If you also add the Hasankeyf Museum and Archeopark, you need to set aside half a day. Some visitors also take boat tours or use suitable vehicles to cross to the caves on the opposite bank, which adds extra time to your schedule.
Things to Consider
The road is narrow and winding and ends in a walk; wheelchair or stroller access is not possible. Some visitors with small children report finding it tiring and turning back halfway. In hot months, water and a hat are essential, as there is very little shade along the way. Some complain about the scarcity of signs and information boards; reading a brief history beforehand can enrich the experience.
