Beksi Castle

The Sason region is hot in summer and snowy in winter. Since climbing to the castle requires a slope walk, spring and autumn months are the most comfortable periods. If you are going in mid-summer, prefer early morning hours, as walking on the slope in the midday heat can be tiring. In winter, there may be a risk of ice on the path, so if you plan to go during that period, it would be beneficial to get information about the road conditions from a local person.

The castle is located 7 kilometers northwest of Batman's Sason district, on the southern slope of Mount Meydanok, near Dereköyü. First, you need to reach Sason town center from Batman by car or minibus. From there, you go towards Dereköyü and follow the slope path leading to the castle. Public transportation is not frequent on this route, so going by private car or hiring a local guide will make your job easier.

Since the castle itself is partially ruined, there is not a large area to explore. 1-2 hours, including climbing the slope, exploring the ruins, and enjoying the view, is sufficient. If you want to add other historical sites in and around Sason (such as Bozıkan Castle) to your itinerary on the same day, you should plan your day accordingly.

Visiting Beksi Castle along with other Byzantine-era castles in Batman is a logical plan. Bozıkan Castle, located in Sason district, is a similar defensive structure in the same region. Seeing both in one day, considering the distance traveled in the same direction, creates a non-tiring route. If you have time, you can visit the Batman Museum to better understand the archaeological past of the region.

The castle is partially ruined; be careful of falling stones and unstable ground during your walk. Since the path is not marked, it is safer to get directions from a local person or go with a guide instead of going alone. Carry enough water during hot summer months, and also consider that phone reception may be weak.

The castle's commanding position over the valley offers a wide view of Sason and the surrounding Dereköyü area. The angle looking down from the slope shows the mountainous texture of the region and agricultural lands together. In photos taken before noon, the light is softer, and shadows are less prominent.

The castle was built by the Byzantines for defensive purposes; the natural slope of Mount Meydanok and its commanding position over the valley align with the military strategy of the period. Today, it stands in its natural ruined state, unrestored. While this does not make it a tourist attraction, it makes it a quiet discovery point for those interested in Batman's little-known historical fabric.
