Çelebi Mehmet Madrasah is an early Ottoman madrasah located in Merzifon district of Amasya, built by Çelebi Sultan Mehmet between 1414-1417; it is known as Saatli Medrese (Clockwise Madrasah) due to the clock tower added in 1865.
Rising in the very heart of Merzifon's historical fabric, the Çelebi Mehmet Madrasah is an important structure that carries the educational tradition of Turkish-Islamic civilization to the present day with its approximately 611-year history. Built by Çelebi Sultan Mehmet between 817-820 (1414-1417) for Ebubekir Mehmet Bin Hamza, the madrasah stands out among early Ottoman madrasahs with its monumental appearance. The first professor of the madrasah was Ferîdüddîn-i Dîvânî.
The structure, which has an open courtyard plan, consists of 20 rooms of different sizes, an entrance iwan, and two side iwans. The iwan-shaped crown gate, adorned with red and white cut stone rows, stands out as the most striking architectural element of the madrasah. The walls, built with rubble stone and brick, reflect the construction understanding of the period, while the clock tower added to the entrance in 1865 gave the structure a different identity. After serving various functions for many years, the madrasah was re-functionalized as the Amasya University Science, Culture and Art Center after a comprehensive restoration process and was ceremonially opened in 2026.

Historical and Architectural Significance
Çelebi Sultan Mehmet, after overcoming the Ottoman throne crisis caused by the Battle of Ankara, embarked on rebuilding the state and had fundamental educational institutions built in various cities of Anatolia. This madrasah in Merzifon is one of the most concrete legacies of this initiative. The structure was completed between 817-820 (1414-1417); it stood out among early Ottoman madrasahs with its size and monumental appearance.
The madrasah's plan consists of rooms and iwans arranged on three sides of a large open courtyard. The crown gate, adorned with red and white cut stone rows, showcases the stone craftsmanship of the period. The walls, rising with a mixture of rubble stone and brick, are a typical reflection of the early Ottoman construction tradition. The clock tower added to the entrance in 1865 brought the spirit of modernization of the Tanzimat era to the structure; it led to the madrasah being known as Saatli Medrese (Clockwise Madrasah) among the public.
Photo Spots
The most striking photo frame of the madrasah is undoubtedly the crown gate. The red and white stone rows create extremely impressive images in the morning light or before sunset, known as the golden hour. Photos taken with a wide angle, leaning against the opposite iwan after entering the courtyard, reveal the symmetrical plan of the structure in all its beauty. The clock tower also offers an interesting composition both during the day and at dusk. Using the stone arched doors of the madrasah rooms as frames allows you to obtain unique shots that create a sense of depth.
