Guide's Note
What is İnpazarcık Rock Settlement?
İnpazarcık Rock Settlement is a multi-layered archaeological site created by carving a natural tuff rock mass near İnpazarcık Village, affiliated with the Bayat district of Afyonkarahisar. The area stands out with its structures from the early Byzantine (Eastern Roman) period; it also contains open-air rock worship traces belonging to the much older Phrygian civilization.
In the area, many elements related to the daily life of a community, such as two Byzantine churches, watchtowers, wine cellars, granaries, and ovens, have survived to the present day. The fact that all these structures are directly carved into the hard rock surface makes the area extremely unique both architecturally and historically. The registration of the region as a 1st and 3rd Degree Archaeological Site clearly demonstrates the importance of the area.
Layers of History: From Phrygians to Byzantines
İnpazarcık is one of the rare areas that bears the traces of at least two major civilizations, not just one. Phrygian period traces are evident with worship areas on rock surfaces and characteristic rock carvings. The Phrygians established a powerful civilization in this geography starting from 1200 BC; they extensively used rock carving for both architectural and religious purposes.
During the Byzantine period, the area gained defensive and residential functions. Watchtowers reveal the strategic importance of the region, while churches indicate the presence of a permanent Christian community here. Wine cellars and granaries prove that the settlement functioned not only as a military but also as an economic and agricultural center. All these data reveal that İnpazarcık has been a continuous living space for centuries.

The natural light falling on the rock walls inside the church ruins creates a dramatic atmosphere.
If you can climb to the high points where the watchtowers are located, you can photograph the rock complex combined with the surrounding rural landscape from a wide angle. Things to Know Before Your Visit
The area is an archaeological site; absolutely avoid touching rock surfaces, moving any objects, and taking materials from the site. Such behaviors not only entail legal sanctions but also prevent future generations from seeing this heritage.
