Aydın's Ancient Traces and Natural Paradises: 2-Day Itinerary

Aydın is a city in the Aegean region that offers both a rich history extending to ancient times and untouched natural beauties. In this two-day itinerary, I have prepared a packed travel plan starting from the lively atmosphere of Kuşadası, extending to the cool waters of Dilek Peninsula, and from there to the mysterious ancient cities and canyons of Caria. With a total of 8 stops, you will both enhance your cultural knowledge and experience peaceful moments intertwined with nature.

Öküz Mehmet Pasha Caravanserai

Located right in the center of Kuşadası, intertwined with the port, this caravanserai was built in 1618 by Grand Vizier Öküz Mehmet Pasha. Its thick rubble stone walls and large inner courtyard immediately draw attention with its architecture resembling a small castle. It is possible to feel the historical texture as you enter the courtyard and pass under the arcades. The rooms on the upper floor of the caravanserai are used as a hotel today, so you can only visit the courtyard and the ground floor. Half an hour is enough here.

Kaleiçi Mosque (Öküz Mehmet Pasha Mosque)

Located in the crowded square of Kuşadası bazaar, Kaleiçi Mosque has a history of approximately 400 years. This square-planned structure, rising from cut stone, immediately stands out from the modern buildings around it. When you enter, its 12-sided central dome with a drum and its pen-work decorations will catch your eye. The fountain in its courtyard is also one of the original details of the structure. You can allocate approximately 45 minutes to visit here.

Güvercinada Castle

Rising on a small islet at the mouth of Kuşadası Bay, Güvercinada Castle is a unique symbol of the city. This castle, known to have been built by Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha, was later reinforced with walls by İlyas Ağa. With its maritime museum inside and especially its panoramic view extending to the bay at sunset, it offers both historical and natural beauties together. Allocate approximately 1.5 hours to visit the castle and the museum.

Zeus Cave

Located in Kuşadası's Güzelçamlı District, near the entrance of Dilek Peninsula National Park, Zeus Cave is known for its icy cold and crystal clear water. This cave, associated with Zeus in mythology, is a great stop for those who want to cool off in the summer heat. Swimming in this natural rock cavity, approximately 10-15 meters deep and 20 meters long, is quite enjoyable. You can spend about 1 hour in the cave.

İçmeler Bay

Located right at the entrance of Dilek Peninsula National Park, İçmeler Bay is preferred by families with children due to its shallow and calm sea. With its fine sandy beach and large picnic areas, it is ideal for spending a day intertwined with nature. As it is the first bay of the national park, it can be a bit crowded on weekends. You can allocate 1.5 hours for swimming and relaxing here.

Aphrodisias Museum

Located within the ancient city of Aphrodisias in Aydın's Karacasu district, this museum exhibits sculptures, sarcophagi, and reliefs unearthed during excavations. Open since 1979, the museum offers an integrated experience with the ancient city itself. Especially the artifacts from the Roman and Byzantine periods are quite impressive. You should allocate a generous amount of time, approximately 3 hours, to visit the museum and the archaeological site together.

Aphrodisias Ancient City

Aphrodisias, dedicated to Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty and love, stands out with the best-preserved stadium in the ancient world and the Temple of Aphrodite. This ancient city, on the UNESCO World Heritage list, is also famous for its marble sculpture. You can also see structures such as the theater, agora, Hadrian's Baths, as well as the tomb of Prof. Kenan Erim and Ara Güler's memorial room. You can allocate approximately 2.5 hours to visit here.

Arapapıştı Canyon

Located at the intersection of Aydın, Denizli, and Muğla borders, Arapapıştı Canyon is one of the natural wonders of the Aegean with its 380-meter height and 6-kilometer length. This deep valley, carved by the Akçay River over the years, is dazzling with its turquoise-emerald waters. Boat tours are organized here, and it is possible to experience the unique view of the canyon from the water. The time you spend in the canyon can take 1.5-2 hours depending on your boat tour preference.

Körteke Castle

Körteke Castle, rising on Kale Tepe in Bozdoğan district, is actually the remains of the ancient city of Xyatis. Dating back to the 5th century BC, the acropolis, Lelegian walls, and cistern offer a panoramic view dominating the Bozdoğan plains. Climbing here can be a bit tiring, but the view is worth it. You can explore the castle with a visit of approximately 1-1.5 hours.

Sırtlanini Cave

Located near the ancient city of Aphrodisias, Sırtlanini Cave in Karacasu district draws attention with its natural vegetation and faunal diversity. This cave, located in the Sırlan Deliği area of Çamarası Neighborhood, is situated in a quiet corner of the Aphrodisias valley. With its undiscovered atmosphere, it is a different stop for nature lovers. Allocate approximately 1 hour to visit the cave and its surroundings.

On this two-day itinerary in Aydın, for lunch, you can prefer local restaurants in Kuşadası center or Karacasu near Aphrodisias. Renting a car for transportation will ensure your comfort, especially between distant points such as ancient cities and canyons. Don't forget to bring your walking shoes and camera!
