Alinda Ancient City

Alinda is one of the important cities of the Caria region of Anatolia. Built on a mountainous and steep terrain above the Karpuzlu district, the city stood out in ancient times with both its strategic location and political weight. Ada, a member of the Hecatomnid dynasty, seeking refuge here in 340 BC and her meeting with Alexander the Great, made Alinda one of the important scenes of Anatolian history. The walls surrounding the city, the two-story agora structure, and the theater are still standing today.

The most suitable period to visit Alinda is between April – June and September – November. In spring, the surroundings turn green, and temperatures are suitable for walking. In July and August, due to its hilltop location, temperatures rise considerably at midday; choosing between 07:00 – 10:00 or after 16:00 during these months will ensure a more comfortable visit. In winter, rainy and cool weather can make dirt roads difficult.

To reach Alinda, you need to turn off the Aydın – Muğla highway at the 30th kilometer towards Karpuzlu. From there, you drive approximately 26 km more to reach Karpuzlu district; the ancient city is located just above the district. Private car is the most practical option; you can drive up to the hill. Since public transport connections are very limited, it would be more logical to rent a car from Aydın city center or opt for a tour organization.

Alinda can be combined with other ancient cities in its vicinity to create an efficient itinerary. It is possible to visit Alabanda Ancient City on the same day; the two archaeological sites are located close to each other. You can start from Aydın, visit Alinda first, then Alabanda, and return to the city. If you are planning a broader program, you can also add Milas or Bodrum to your route.

Alinda's strongest photo spot is the ancient theater; the valley and mountain views spreading from the seating steps offer extremely beautiful shots, especially in the morning light. The two-story agora structure is also striking with its columns and stonework. The rock tombs are ideal for unique compositions where natural rock formations and history intertwine. Corners where olive trees meet ancient stones also attract the interest of photography enthusiasts.

Alinda alone covers a half-day visit; an average of 1.5 – 2.5 hours is sufficient. If you plan to include Karpuzlu and other ancient cities in the vicinity in your program, allocating a full day will ensure a more relaxed trip. Overnight accommodation is not necessary for this day trip from Aydın; you can leave your hotel in Aydın or Muğla in the morning and return in the evening.

The ancient city terrain is uneven and stony; comfortable walking shoes are a must. Shade is very limited, so bring sunscreen and plenty of water. Some areas may be closed as excavation work is still ongoing. There is a security guard at the entrance who directs visitors. Museum Card holders should have their cards ready for entry. Check the weather forecast in advance, as dirt roads can become slippery in rainy weather.
