Ramazan Pasha Mosque is a historical mosque located in the center of Aydın bazaar, built in 1595 and rebuilt in 1901; it has a plain exterior and a baroque-decorated interior, and hosted the first resistance meeting of the War of Independence in 1919.
Ramazan Pasha Mosque rises on Doğu Gazi Boulevard, in the bazaar square in the city center of Aydın. According to its waqf document dated 1595, the mosque was built by Ramazan Pasha, the brother of Üveys Pasha, one of the important figures of the period. It was completely destroyed in the great earthquake of 1899. The structure standing today was rebuilt in 1901 through the initiative of Sökeli Halil Pasha. This structure, consisting of cut stone, brick, and marble; comprises a square-planned single-domed sanctuary and a three-sectioned last prayer area to its north.
The most striking aspect of the mosque is that, despite its rather plain appearance from the outside, its interior is entirely decorated in the Baroque style. Ten large windows designed in the shape of water droplets, colorful glasswork, plaster reliefs, and wood carvings are the main elements enriching the interior. Visitors often express being impressed by this contrast upon entering. The structure stands out not only architecturally but also for its historical significance: On May 22, 1919, during the days when the first sparks of the War of Independence were ignited, the resistance meeting of the people of Aydın was held inside this mosque. This feature elevates Ramazan Pasha Mosque beyond being merely a place of worship. Another prominent point is that the mosque gains a particularly lively atmosphere during Ramadan with the Tarawih prayers recited with khatm (recitation of the entire Quran).

Guide's Note
History of the Mosque
The story of Ramazan Pasha Mosque actually covers two separate construction periods. The first mosque was built in 1595 by Ramazan Pasha, the brother of Üveys Pasha. In 1899, a major earthquake that deeply affected the region completely destroyed the structure. The mosque visited today was rebuilt in 1901 under the leadership of Sökeli Halil Pasha. Although this reconstruction process led to a certain departure from the mosque's original character, the structure continues to maintain its central place in Aydın's urban memory.
The historical importance of the mosque does not only stem from the Ottoman period. On May 22, 1919, the people of Aydın held their first organized resistance meeting against the Greek forces inside this mosque. This meeting is considered one of the first sparks of the War of Independence on the Aegean front. This information elevates the structure far beyond being merely a place of worship.
Architecture and Decoration
The mosque consists of a square-planned single-domed sanctuary and a three-sectioned last prayer area to its north. The exterior facade of the structure was built using cut stone, brick, and marble; it presents a rather plain appearance from the outside.
The real surprise awaits inside: The sanctuary is entirely decorated in the Baroque style. Ten large windows designed in the form of water droplets, colorful glasswork, plaster reliefs, and wood carvings are the main elements enriching the interior. The contrast between the simplicity of the exterior and the ornate interior is the point that attracts the most attention from visitors.
