Cihanoğlu Tower

Cihanoğlu Tower was built by Cihanoğlu İbrahim Ağa in 1763-1764. The Cihanoğulları were known as a powerful Ayan family in Aydın and the Aegean Region; the tower arose from this family's need for protection against raids and attacks during the feudal period. The structure was initially designed to be connected to a mansion, forming a complex with the mosque and other family buildings. A fire in 1948 completely destroyed the neighboring mansion; despite being damaged by this fire, the tower managed to survive. Today, it remains one of the rare surviving examples of the Ayan towers in the region.

Rising four stories above a basement, the structure was built using a masonry technique that combines stone and brick. The first floor contains a room and a cellar, the second floor features battlements and observation elements for defense, the third floor has rooms and defensive sections, and the fourth floor includes a terrace and watchtowers. The original interior of the tower contained a bedroom, a living room, an observation room, a Turkish bath, and a heating room known as cehennemlik. Additions of a Turkish bath and terrace were made in the early 19th century, and plaster decorations were added in the early 20th century.

The Aegean climate prevails in Koçarlı; summers are hot and dry, and winters are mild. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are the most favorable periods for both sightseeing and photography. During summer, the midday weather is quite hot, so choosing morning or late afternoon hours ensures a more comfortable visit. Winter season visiting hours are stated as 08:30-17:30; for summer hours, please confirm with an official source before visiting.

Cihanoğlu Tower is located in the Koçarlı district center, approximately 25-30 km from Aydın city center. Regular minibus and bus services operate from Aydın bus station to Koçarlı. Once you reach Koçarlı, the tower can be found on foot as it is in the district center, near the mosque. Parking is available in the district center for those arriving by private car.

Cihanoğlu Tower, with its four-story height and unique appearance created by its stone-and-brick texture, is an interesting structure for photography. To capture the entire tower, you can take photos from a distance on the opposite facade. The view of the battlements and the tower silhouette in the sunset light are among the frames admired by visitors. Since entry into the tower is not possible, it is necessary to focus on exterior and courtyard shots.

Most visitors state that the tower gate is closed and entry is not possible. The structure can be examined from the outside and the courtyard. Since there may not be explanatory information signs around the tower, a brief research about its history before your visit will make your experience more meaningful. Although some visitors emphasize that the structure appears neglected and should be brought into tourism, observations also indicate that the municipality keeps the surroundings clean.

Koçarlı is a small district of Aydın province, so dining options are limited. You can find simple examples of Aegean cuisine in local restaurants in the district center. Olive oil dishes, fresh vegetable dishes, and Aydın's famous figs are also reflected on the tables in this region.
