Hasan Çelebi Mosque (Old New Mosque)

If you want to comfortably examine the interior and architectural details, the hours between prayer times are the most suitable. The period between noon and afternoon prayers offers a bright and relatively calm visiting opportunity. For exploring the courtyard and ablution fountain, spring and early autumn months can be preferred; considering Aydın's heat, these periods will be much more comfortable. Also, keep in mind that the mosque will be crowded during Friday prayer times.

Hasan Çelebi Mosque is located on Batı Gazi Boulevard, one of the main arteries of Aydın city center, making access quite easy. Those using city minibuses or municipal buses along the Gazi Boulevard route from Aydın bus station or train station can reach the mosque within a few minutes. For those arriving by car, it is possible to find parking on the boulevard and in surrounding streets. It is also within walking distance from the city center.

Hasan Çelebi Mosque was endowed in 1585 by Hasan Çelebi, the brother of Üveys Pasha, the Beylerbeyi of Egypt. The structure was planned together with a madrasah and designed with a courtyard adorned with bitter orange trees. As one of the beautiful examples of the Ottoman single-domed mosque tradition in Aydın, the structure follows the classical scheme with its square-plan prayer hall, three-section portico, and a minaret with a single balcony.

Cut stone, brick, and marble were used together in the construction. The dome is transitioned by squinches; this technique reflects the early period characteristics of Ottoman architecture. The most striking element of the mosque is its marble mihrab: its polygonal niche, covered with a muqarnas-decorated conch, forms the focal point of the building's ornamentation program. Rectangular windows with pointed arched pediments are arranged on the facades. The structure underwent an extensive renovation in 1950, along with the ablution fountain in its courtyard; it acquired the name "Old New Mosque" among the public in connection with this renovation.

Among the best photo angles of the mosque are the general view extending from the courtyard gate to the dome, a close-up of the muqarnas mihrab, and the three-section dome sequence of the portico. The minaret forms an integrated composition with the structure in wide-angle shots taken from Batı Gazi Boulevard. In the morning light, the courtyard and ablution fountain also offer interesting frames. Do not forget to show respect to the congregation when taking photos during prayer times.

Batı Gazi Boulevard and its surroundings offer various food and beverage options due to their proximity to the city center. After your visit, you can try Aegean cuisine's olive oil dishes and Aydın's unique fig desserts at restaurants on the boulevard or in nearby streets. The tea gardens in the city center are also a good choice for a short break.

The mosque is actively used for worship; therefore, your entry to the interior may be restricted during prayer times. You need to remove your shoes when entering the prayer hall. Female visitors are advised to carry a headscarf. Be careful not to disturb the congregation when taking photos. The structure has been in use since its renovation in 1950; wheelchair access may be difficult as floor surfaces can be uneven.

Hasan Çelebi Mosque can be included in a half-day cultural route along with other historical structures in Aydın city center. Thanks to its location on Batı Gazi Boulevard, it is possible to create a walking route that includes other Ottoman-era works and the Aydın Museum. It is also a good starting point for those who want to get to know the city's historical fabric.
