Cihanoğlu Mosque is an Ottoman-era complex built in 1756-57 in Aydın city center. The group of structures, consisting of a mosque, madrasah, tomb, public fountain (sebil), and fountain, is one of the important examples of 18th-century Ottoman architecture with its Baroque-style interior decorations and rubble stone architecture.
The Cihanoğlu Complex, built by Müderris Cihanoğlu Abdülaziz in 1756-57, is the most comprehensive surviving Ottoman structure complex in the Aydın provincial center. The complex consists of a mosque, madrasah, tomb, public fountain (sebil), and fountain. The mosque is situated on a high platform on a sloping area in the east-west direction; on the lower level, there is an arched passage to the west and a public fountain to the south. Madrasah cells are lined up to the north and east of the courtyard.
Built using rubble stone and occasionally brick, the structure has a square plan measuring 9.50x9.50 meters. With a single minaret in the northwest, a three-section portico (son cemaat yeri), and pendentive dome transitions, it exhibits typical features of 18th-century Ottoman architecture. The interior decoration of the mosque is entirely Baroque in character; the floral motifs, "C" and "S" curves, and moldings in the plaster decorations are among the most prominent examples of this style. Visitors particularly highlight the squinch transitions of the main dome and the ornate portico. The lower part of the mosque was historically used as a bazaar; the adjacent madrasah was renovated in 1954 and converted into a student dormitory. The restoration completed in 2010 largely restored the building's original appearance.

Guide's Note
History of the Complex
The Cihanoğlu Complex was established in 1756-57 by Abdülaziz, an important representative of the Cihanoğulları, a family of scholars and local notables active in the Aydın-Koçarlı-Nazilli region. This group of structures, consisting of a mosque, madrasah, tomb, public fountain (sebil), and fountain, is considered among the most comprehensive Ottoman legacies from the 18th century in the region.
The lower floor of the mosque was historically used as a bazaar, giving the structure a commercial function. The adjacent madrasah was renovated in 1954 and converted into the Foundations Student Dormitory. The structure underwent a comprehensive restoration completed in 2010, largely regaining its original appearance.
Architectural Features
The mosque was built on a high platform on a sloping terrain in the east-west direction. The square-plan structure, measuring 9.50x9.50 meters, was constructed with a mixture of rubble stone and brick. The mosque, which has a single minaret in the northwest, features a three-section portico (son cemaat yeri) covered by three domes resting on four round columns. The transitions of the main dome are squinched, while the transitions of the portico domes are pendentives.
The most striking feature of the mosque is its interior decoration. The prayer hall (harim) is entirely covered with Baroque-style plaster decorations. Floral motifs, "C" and "S" curves, and moldings form the basic elements of this ornamentation. To the south, the mihrab wall protrudes outwards; on the lower level, there are arched passages and the Cihanoğlu public fountain. Madrasah cells are lined up to the north and east of the courtyard.
When to Visit?
Considering Aydın's summer heat, spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) months offer a much more comfortable visiting experience for the complex. An important note for those who wish to see the interior of the mosque: the building is only open during prayer times. If you want to examine the interior decorations in person, you need to find out the prayer times in advance.
How to Get There?
Cihanoğlu Mosque is located at Çankaya Caddesi No:50 in Aydın city center. You can reach the center from any point in the city by municipal buses or minibuses, then walk to the mosque. For those arriving by car, there are paid parking options around the mosque. For those coming to Aydın from İzmir, Denizli, or Muğla, the intercity bus terminal is also close to the center.
Photo Spots
The view of the complex from the platform, along with the arched passage and public fountain on the lower level, creates a strong composition. The window rows on the exterior facade of the mosque and the minaret offer interesting shots under different lighting conditions throughout the day. If you can enter the interior, the Baroque plaster decorations and dome transitions provide rich photographic content; it would be appropriate to prefer a wide-angle lens for these sections. It is recommended to avoid using flash inside the prayer hall.
Route Suggestion
You can combine the Cihanoğlu Complex with other historical sites in Aydın city center to create a half-day cultural tour. When visiting the complex, allocate time not only for the mosque but also for the madrasah cells, public fountain, and fountain in the courtyard; seeing the group of structures as a whole makes the visit much more meaningful. After your visit, you can try local delicacies in Aydın's bazaar.
Things to Consider
Since the mosque is accessed by stairs, visitors with mobility limitations are advised to be prepared in advance. Visitors note that the outer garden is sometimes neglected; this can negatively affect the overall impression. To see the interior, find out the prayer times in advance; the building is only open during prayer times. It is necessary to be quiet and respectful during prayers. When entering, you must remove your shoes, and female visitors must cover their heads.
