If you have one day in Adana, don't miss this route that invites you to trace the footsteps of thousands of years of history. Starting from Misis Mound and extending to the Ancient Cities of Ayas and Magarsus, this trip will allow you to discover the important port cities and mounds of the Roman Empire in the Cilicia region.
A single day in Adana is filled with a route that will take you into the deep history of Çukurova, where you will discover ancient port cities and ancient mounds. This journey, starting by the Ceyhan River in the morning and ending on the Mediterranean coast, brings together different layers of history.
Misis Mound and Bridge
Rising on the banks of the Ceyhan River to the east of Adana, Misis Mound is one of the most important archaeological sites in Çukurova with 7,000 years of uninterrupted settlement traces. It has hosted many civilizations from the Neolithic period to the Middle Ages. Right next to the mound, there is a stone arched bridge dating from the Roman period. This bridge shows the strategic location of the ancient city of Mopsuhestia on the Silk Road. While walking on the bridge, you can enjoy both history and the serene view of the Ceyhan River. You can allocate approximately 1.5 hours here.
Ayas Ancient City
After Misis, we turn our route to the Yumurtalık district. Here, the Ancient City of Ayas, built on a rocky peninsula, awaits you. This ancient port city, known by different names such as Aigeai, Lajazzo, and Ayaş throughout history, became one of the important centers of the region during the Roman period. The city walls, port ruins, and necropolis area of the ancient city have survived to the present day. Especially with its location on the peninsula, it offers views opening to the Mediterranean. You can allocate approximately 1.5 hours here to explore the historical texture intertwined with Yumurtalık Castle.
Magarsus Ancient City
We complete our day in the Karataş district, with the Ancient City of Magarsus rising on a cape overlooking the Mediterranean. This ancient port and trade center, founded in the 7th century BC, is also known for legends that Alexander the Great prayed here before his campaign. The most striking feature of Magarsus is that it has the only theater in the ancient world with a sea view. Although excavation work is still ongoing, the theater ruins and surrounding columns are worth seeing. Allocate approximately 1.5 hours to sit in this theater, positioned against the blue of the Mediterranean, and breathe in the atmosphere of thousands of years ago.
To complete this ancient cities route in Adana, traveling by your own car is the most practical method. For lunch, you can choose local restaurants in Yumurtalık or Karataş where you can find fresh seafood. At the end of the day, you can return to Adana city center from Karataş.
