Feke Castle

The most suitable periods to visit Feke Castle are April–May and September–October. In spring, the foothills of the Taurus Mountains turn green; ideal conditions for both hiking and photography are created. In autumn, temperatures drop, the air clears, and the view extending to distant valleys becomes sharper.

During the summer months, the Adana region experiences very hot weather. Those planning a visit in July and August should prefer early morning hours, which offers a great advantage for both protection from sunstroke and capturing photos when the light is most beautiful. In winter, due to the high altitude, the road and hill can be slippery; caution is advised during this season.

Feke Castle is located approximately 6 kilometers northeast of Feke district, Adana province, within the borders of Sülemişli Neighborhood. The total distance from Adana city center to the castle is approximately 137 kilometers.

There are regular bus services from Adana bus terminal to Feke district. However, there is no public transport option from the district center to the castle; therefore, it is necessary to use a private vehicle or local taxi. If you are coming with your own vehicle, you can enter Feke Castle or Sülemişli Neighborhood into navigation apps. The final section of the road to the castle can be narrow and rugged, so traveling with high-traction vehicles offers a more comfortable experience.

Instead of visiting Feke Castle alone, you can combine it with other historical sites in the region for a more productive day. Start your day early by ascending to the castle; you will get the best results for both the view and photography in the morning light.

After the castle visit, be sure to see the nearby Kara Kilise (Black Church); these two structures together reflect the region's Byzantine heritage in a complementary way. In the afternoon, descend to Feke district center to taste local delicacies and don't forget to drink menengiç coffee. For those who want to extend their route a bit, Anavarza Castle in Adana's Kozan district can also be added to the visit list on the same day.

Feke Castle is one of the rare places that offers multiple shooting angles for photography enthusiasts. When viewed from the castle walls, the layered silhouette of the Taurus Mountains and the valleys stretching below create an impressive composition. Especially in the early morning hours when fog settles in the valleys, this view takes on an almost fairytale appearance.

The castle's watchtower and restored wall sections are ideal for architectural photographs that highlight the historical texture. If you climb the castle near sunset, the reflections of the twilight light on the stone walls allow you to capture extraordinary shots. A wide-angle lens or panorama mode helps you best convey the expansive view offered by the 1270-meter altitude.

Entry to the castle is free, and there are no official opening or closing hours. However, considering that the castle is located on a steep hill and some parts are in ruins, wearing sturdy hiking shoes is very important. Climbing with slippery or flat-soled shoes can be both difficult and risky.

Since there are no food and beverage sales points in the vicinity, it is recommended to bring sufficient water and snacks. A hat and sunscreen should also be in your bag to protect from the sun. Although some sections of the castle walls have been restored, remember that the structure is generally in ruins; proceeding with careful steps is important for both your safety and the preservation of the historical fabric.

Feke Castle was built by the Byzantines in the 12th century to control the caravan route passing through the region. The rectangular-planned structure was reinforced with eight towers and a watchtower; its overall elliptical shape reflects the typical features of the defensive architecture of the period.

Located at an altitude of 1270 meters, the castle was placed at an extremely well-thought-out strategic point. This height allowed for early detection of approaching dangers and command over a wide geographical area. Over time, the structure changed hands, coming under the control of various powers in different periods. Today, although the entrance section is largely destroyed, a significant portion of the walls and the watchtower still stand; some sections are being restored to be passed on to future generations.
