Stone Bridge (Adana)

Adana is among Turkey's hottest cities, and temperatures can exceed 40 degrees Celsius in summer. Therefore, April, May, September, and October are the most suitable months to visit the Stone Bridge. When the weather is mild, walking on the bridge and observing both banks of the Seyhan River becomes a much more enjoyable experience.

If you must come in the summer, choose the early morning hours or the late afternoon when the sun softens. At sunset, the bridge and the river together offer a magnificent view; these hours are especially valuable for those who want to take photos. While visiting in winter is possible, occasional rainy weather can make the bridge surface slippery.

The Stone Bridge is located at a very central point of Adana, as it connects the Seyhan and Yüreğir districts. You can reach it from Adana Şakirpaşa Airport by taxi in approximately 10–15 minutes. From the city center, it is easily accessible by municipal buses and minibuses; you can use local public transport applications to plan your route.

Since the bridge is located in the heart of the old Adana texture, it can also be explored on foot along with nearby structures such as the historical bazaar and the Grand Mosque. If you are coming by car, it is recommended to head to nearby parking lots; the bridge is only open to pedestrians.

The Stone Bridge is one of Adana's most iconic photo locations. Shots taken from both ends of the bridge reflect the width of the Seyhan River and the grandeur of the historical structure together. From the riverbank, especially when looking from under the bridge, the Roman-era stone arches offer an impressive perspective.

At sunset, photos taken from the west-facing facade cover the bridge with a golden light. In the early morning, the mist over the river and the calm water surface create a different atmosphere. Panoramic shots framing both banks of the Seyhan while walking across the bridge are also quite impressive.

According to the inscription exhibited in the Adana Archaeology Museum, the bridge was built by an architect named Auxentios during the Roman Imperial Period and has a history of approximately 1700 years. Some sources state that the region has been inhabited since the Neolithic period and that the lands where the bridge was built hosted much older civilizations.

From the day it was built until 1945, the structure served a strategic function on the only land route connecting Europe to the Middle East. There are also records of taxes being collected from travelers crossing the bridge throughout history. After extensive renovation in 2000, it was closed to vehicle traffic and made accessible only to pedestrians. With its 310 meters length and 11.40 meters width, it retains its feature as one of the largest bridges of its era.

The area around the Stone Bridge is surrounded by places offering the most authentic flavors of Adana cuisine. Adana kebab, which has made the city famous worldwide, is the main menu item of long-established restaurants in the historical bazaar and surrounding streets within walking distance of the bridge. This experience, complemented by local turnip juice (şalgam suyu) and ayran, reflects a unique dining culture of Adana.

Around the bridge, there are also small artisan restaurants offering liver wraps (ciğer dürüm), bıçak arası (minced meat dish), and various types of pide. For dessert, you'll find tahini-molasses combinations and ice cream shops. The area gets quite busy at lunchtime; you can have a quieter dining experience in the early or late hours.

Entry to the Stone Bridge is free, and no ticket or reservation is required. While the bridge is open to pedestrian traffic every day, visitor density can increase, especially on weekends and holidays. For those who want to take photos, choosing quieter hours yields better results.

In summer, the sun is quite strong, so it is recommended to bring water, a hat, and sunscreen. Since the bridge surface is stone, wearing comfortable and non-slip shoes will ensure a safer walk. Be careful to keep the surroundings clean; avoid throwing trash into the river and on the bridge.
