Kocaeli, the green heart of Marmara. This two-day route takes you away from the city crowds and into the embrace of nature. I have prepared a packed travel plan with a total of 8 stops, from the depths of caves to the peaks of plateaus.
Beşkayalar Nature Park
Located in Başiskele, in the middle of the Samanlı Mountains, Beşkayalar Nature Park takes its name from the five large rocks at the confluence of streams. This is a vast area of 1,600 hectares, full of valleys, small waterfalls, and caves. It is a popular spot for hiking and camping. The views of Körfez and İzmit are an added bonus. You can spend about 1.5 hours here.
Cirbin Ali Cave
Located within Beşkayalar Nature Park, Cirbin Ali Cave is a natural formation approximately 250 meters long, containing a lake and a waterfall. Exploring it is a bit challenging due to the lack of lighting, but the natural lake and waterfall inside are worth the effort. The path is rugged, so you should prepare well. It's good to allocate about 1.5 hours here.
Veysel Candan Cave
Located near Cirbin Ali Cave, Veysel Candan Cave is 148 meters long and 24 meters deep. It offers a cool environment with a constant temperature of 15 degrees throughout the year. You can explore the 350-meter section open to visitors. Like Cirbin Ali, this is an interesting stop for nature lovers. 1.5 hours is sufficient for exploration.
Yuvacık Dam
Located 10-12 kilometers from İzmit, in the valley where two streams meet, Yuvacık Dam is surrounded by lush green forests. With its trout facilities, camping areas, and hiking trails, it is an ideal place for day trips. The view of the dam lake is especially beautiful in spring and autumn. You can spend about an hour and a half here.
Kuzuyayla Nature Park – Kartepe
Kuzuyayla Nature Park, located on a plateau in Kartepe overlooking Sapanca Lake, is surrounded by pine and beech forests. Accessible by cable car, this park is a great place for picnics and walks. You can enjoy the snow in winter and relax in the cool air in summer. You should allocate 1.5 hours here.
Kartepe Ski Center
Located in the Kartepe district of Kocaeli, the ski center is one of the important winter sports facilities in the Marmara Region with its four main slopes and cable car line. In winter, you can ski and snowboard, and in other seasons, you can go hiking amidst lush green forests and views of Sapanca Lake. You can spend about 1.5 hours at the center.
Maşukiye, Kartepe
Located north of Sapanca Lake, at the foothills of Kartepe, Maşukiye is a nature village famous for its forests and streams. You can eat fresh trout in wooden restaurants and walk among the waterfalls. It also offers accommodation in bungalow facilities. This place is ideal for about 1.5 hours of exploration.
Sapanca Lake
Stretching between Kocaeli and Sakarya, Sapanca Lake is one of the largest freshwater lakes in the region with an area of 47 km². It is surrounded by the Samanlı Mountains to the north and forested slopes to the south. It is a popular spot for lakeside walks, picnics, and photography. Allocate 1.5 hours to spend a peaceful evening by the lake.
This route in Kocaeli brings together many different experiences for nature lovers. While following the route, don't forget to taste local delicacies, especially the trout restaurants. Preferring a private car for transportation will allow you to easily reach different points.
