Bandırma Ship Museum

The Bandırma Steamer is a symbol of a journey that changed the course of Turkish history. On May 19, 1919, Mustafa Kemal Pasha and his delegation departed from Istanbul on this ship and landed in Samsun, taking the first steps of the War of Independence. Today, the structure open to visitors in Samsun is a faithful replica of that historic steamer. The ship is not just an exhibition area; as the vast majority of visitors state, when you enter, your emotional connection with history takes on a whole new dimension.

While the museum is open year-round, during the May 19 Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day, like all of Samsun, this area is filled with a special energy. Crowds can be intense during celebrations; if you prefer a quieter visit, April or October are good options. In summer, Doğupark's coastal location adds an extra pleasure to the trip.

Occasionally, access to the interior of the ship may be closed due to relocation or maintenance processes. Checking the current status by calling the museum before your visit will prevent disappointment.

The Bandırma Ship Museum is located within Doğupark in Samsun's Canik district. It is possible to reach it by municipal buses heading towards Canik from the city center. 45 minutes to 1 hour is sufficient to visit only the ship museum. If you include the National Struggle Open Air Museum and carefully examine the exhibits, the total time can extend up to 1.5 hours. If you add a short walk along Doğupark's coastline, it makes for a nice half-day program.

The exterior of the ship offers impressive shots during sunny hours. The bow section and around the chimney are among the most preferred angles. The scenes with wax figures inside are also photographically strong; going during daylight hours yields better results as lighting conditions can vary. Photos taken from Doğupark's coastline with the ship in the background are also quite successful.

Appointment: Appointments are mandatory for group visits (school groups, organizations). Individual visitors can go directly.

Museum Pass: Museum Pass is not valid at this venue; you need to pay cash or by card at the entrance.
